The ViceVersa team is pleased to announce the availability of ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.4 BETA for download.
New Features
- UNICODE support: ViceVersa PRO now supports all character and special characters of the world including, but not limited to, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, etc.
- Enhanced reporting capabilities: ViceVersa now reports total bytes copied, deleted, added during sync, backup, replication; supports the ability to log only summary and errors for improved control as well as many other logging and reporting enhancements.
- Added comparison summary and execution summary.
- The User Interface has been redesigned. ViceVersa 2.0.0.4 is now even easier to use but still retains full control over synchronization, backup and replication methods with over 60 options for the advanced user.
- The synchronization methods have been re-arranged.
- Added the ability to run a profile from the main window instead of clicking on 'compare' first.
- Improved bandwidth throttling.
Important Notes Before Installation
- It is possible to install ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.4 BETA along side with ViceVersa PRO 1.3.1 as both versions can co-exist on the same computer. The uninstallation routine uninstalls ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.4 BETA completely and leaves ViceVersa PRO 1.3.1 in place. This means that users of version 1.3.1 can try 2.0.0.4 Beta without conflicts.
- ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.4 can read ViceVersa PRO 1.3.1 projects. ViceVersa PRO 1.3.1 can NOT read ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.4 projects. BTW, in version 2.0.0.4 projects are now called "profiles".
- If you have registered ViceVersa PRO 1.3.1, also ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.4 BETA will be registered.
- VVLauncher 2.0.0.2 Beta will work with ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.4 BETA.
- The Help file is not yet included in the BETA version.

Ran a profile with 1.3.1 that synchronized folders on Drive C with a removable flash drive. The files on the flash drive are encrypted. If I load the profile in latest Beta 2 and try and do a folder comparison I get an error message that password is invalid and comparison is aborted. Profile still runs fine in 1.3.1. |

Can you say more about the ways in which it has been enhanced?
There is little information on how the current version works or on its proper use. I understood that it uses 128 bit AES and the password is scrambled and stored in the project settings file. But there is little guidance on passwords. If you use a short password (say 6 characters rather than 22) you presumably don't get 128 bit AES security. And I'm not quite sure why the password needs to be scrambled in the project file. It doesn't protect the encyption--the encyption is only as strong as the protection of the project file. If you back it up with the rest of your files it is useless, regardless of being scrambled or not.
Nice options would be:
-a key generator to generate a sufficently strong number of random, mixed case, alphanumeric and special characters.
- a dual key option e.g. key stored in project file with additional key (e.g. memorized password, key on USB disk, etc.). This wouldn't work well on automated backups as second key would need to be provided when backup was initiated but would be useful for manual backups of files requiring very strong security.
-Ability to easily set up new project files that use same key(s) as existing project files. |

You always et max security with any password size, because the HASH of the password is actually used to encrypt files. But if the password is too easy it is vulnerable to a 'dictionary' attack where simple password are just tried out to see if they work. Is a bit like trying all keys in a key hole... if the password is, let's say, 10 chars, there are many combination to try out...

The scrambled password in the project file can be extracted from the project file, you are right, but the fact that is scrambled make this quite difficult. Anyway, the project file needs to be kept private.

I think this is out of the scope of ViceVersa.... but there exist many programs that can generate and rememebr passwords...

this is a very interesting feature to add!

Did you try to use 'Save As' |

Thanks, that was very helpful.
So basically:
1. Use long, complex passwords.
2. Use a password generator (e.g KeePass) to generate item 1.
3. Keep project file private
To set up new projects with same password file I've just been copying the project file which I guess is equivalent to save as.
It would be great if you added the dual key option. This is found on a lot of security software e.g.
Blowfish Advanced CS (http://bfacs.sourceforge.net/)
KeePass (http://keepass.sourceforge.net/)
I also see that the encryption now upgraded to 256AES. Thanks. |
