|
|
The ViceVersa team is pleased to announce that ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.2 BETA is now available for download.
New Features
- UNICODE support: ViceVersa PRO now supports all character and special characters of the world including, but not limited to, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, etc.
- Enhanced reporting capabilities: ViceVersa now reports total bytes copied, deleted, added during sync, backup, replication; supports the ability to log only summary and errors for improved control as well as many other logging and reporting enhancements.
- The User Interface has been redesigned. ViceVersa 2.0.0.2 is now even easier to use but still retains full control over synchronization, backup and replication methods with over 60 options for the advanced user.
- The synchronization methods have been re-arranged.
- Added the ability to run a profile from the main window instead of clicking on 'compare' first.
- Improved bandwidth throttling.
Important Notes Before Installation
- It is possible to install ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.2 BETA along side with ViceVersa PRO 1.3.1 as both versions can co-exist on the same computer. The uninstallation routine uninstalls ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.2 BETA completely and leaves ViceVersa PRO 1.3.1 in place. This means that users of version 1.3.1 can try 2.0.0.2 Beta without conflicts.
- ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.2 can read ViceVersa PRO 1.3.1 projects. ViceVersa PRO 1.3.1 can NOT read ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.2 projects. BTW, in version 2.0.0.2 projects are now called "profiles".
- If you have registered ViceVersa PRO 1.3.1, also ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.2 BETA will be registered.
- VVLauncher will NOT work with ViceVersa PRO 2.0.0.2 BETA.
- The Help file is not yet included in the BETA version.

I have tried out the beta and notice it is still limited to 259 characters...These is a real issue on large data shifts...Please can you resolve it on the new version? |

We are evaluating if we can support this before we release the final 2.0
The NTFS file system allows creating paths of almost unlimited length. However, the Windows API does not allow path longer than 256 bytes. For instance the Windows Explorer does not support paths longer than 256 bytes. Neither does MS Office.
Can you give an example of your paths longer than 256 chars?
Can you access them with Windows Explorer?

Different user from poster above.
I don't know about XP but on W2K I downloaded some software that installed into directories with extremely long path names. When I went to uninstall the software W2K couldn't delete the long paths. I tried all sorts of things to get rid of this junk because it caused problems with backups using VVP and other software. Eventually I found a third party delete program that got rid of the paths and associated files.

We have numerous examples on our company data areas..people saving docs in word with the full title and saving it deep within the data structure...I am struggling to use this app when migrating large chunks of data because of this...It can be overcome by switching to MS Robocopy app that comes with the resource kit..but that kinda eliminates yours from any serious data replication....We also use DoubleTake but ths is a bit over the top for a basic file/data migration from server to server. we tend to use this for Disaster Recovery File replication.
This problem won't go away...Longer file names and Office default tendency to save its file with the title of the Document doesn't help. |

It is quite rare to exceed 256 characters for a file path name. If that is needed, ViceVersa PRO 2 now supports long path names exceeding 256 chars. To enable this in a specific folder you will need to prefix the folder name with \\?\
Example
To allow paths longer than 256 characters in c:\folder\backup\
use \\?\c:\folder\backup\ as source (or target) in ViceVersa. _________________ --
