|
|
Dear All,
I have the following question regarding an issue with files created under Office 365 that have been backed up and then restored with ViceVersa.
I mostly work on my desktop. When there is a holiday coming up, I transfer everything to the laptop using the latest version of ViceVersa. I work while on holiday. After the end of the holiday – in the reverse order again via ViceVersa. A Word or Excel file that was created or edited on one device cannot be saved after editing it on the other device – the following error is displayed:
Your changes could not be saved to [file name] because of a sharing violation. Try saving to a different file.
The only option is to save the edited file under a new name, then delete the original file and rename the new one back to the old name. Quite a laborious procedure for each file.
Both installatons are legal and registered to my email address (the same email address) but the Windows profile under which I am working on the two machines might not be under the same name although both Window 11 installations are also legal.
Also, I have just tried, and if I just copy a file to a USB drive and thus transfer it to the laptop, that does not result in an error under the above scenario. To me, ViceVersa (some of its parameters) must be causing this. But which parameters?
Best regards,
BW |

Thank you for your answer.
The reason why I posted the question here is that I believe that ViceVersa v6 copies some file attributes of Microsoft Office files, or else, changes somehow the file attributes, and this results in Office throwing the above mentioned error message, when such a copied file is edited and there is an attempt to save it on the target machine.
What profile options could be causing this?
Best regards,

Hi, ViceVersa never changes any file contents when copying (source nor target). You can verify this by enabling CRC verification in the profile settings. I suspect the issue is with files edited on a different PC? _________________ --

The problem exhibits when an Office file that was created or edited on machine 1 is copied with ViceVersa to machine 2, then edited on machine 2. It will not save because of a "sharing violation".
Then, after the files have been restored to machine 1 via ViceVersa, the same thing happens.
The contents of files are not changed, that is clear. But what security attribute could be causing a sharing violation? |

Hi, I think this would be the part that causes the issue: "edited on machine 2"
When copying from machine 2 back to machine 1, ViceVersa just copies the file as is, after it was edited on machine 2.
You can try copying the files manually using with File Explorer instead of ViceVersa, they should show the same issue after being edited on machine 2 and copied back? _________________ --

Hi Admin!
When the file is copied to a USB and then to the target machine, it can be edited and saved without issue.
Therefore, I have reached the conclusion that ViceVersa is to blame.
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2021 files, backed up with ViceVerca to machine 2 cannot be saved under the original name after editing.
Best regards,

Hi, thank you, can you post the profile file settings (.fsf)?
Are you copying file permissions?
Could you post the minimum steps to reproduce this issue? We can try recreating this problem on our machines.

Hi!
Not sure how to attach the profile files here. Can I send them by email? Which email should I use?
Best regards,
