|
|
My 16 TB drive is full of films. I really don't want to divide the drive into two folders (like A-M then N-Z). I want to keep everything in one large folder.
Can vice versa daisy-chain the backup? I mean can it fill up the first 8TB drive and then ask me to insert the 2nd in a single backup operation? |

Hi, unfortunately ViceVersa can't do that as it is not sequential. The only way with ViceVersa would be to split the files across the 2 target drives with filters, e.g. :
*** Example 1 (split into 2 profiles) ***
Need to Replicate, Backup or Sync:
----------------------------------
Source: c:\SourceFolder\
Target: X:\TargetFolder\
Profile A
---------
Source: c:\SourceFolder\
Target: X:\TargetFolder\
Include Subfolder Filter \[a-n]* - Case Sensitive: No
(This filter includes only all level-1 subfolders with names starting with a to n)
Profile B
---------
Source: c:\SourceFolder\
Target: X:\TargetFolder\
Exclude Subfolder Filter \[a-n]* - Case Sensitive: No
(This filter excludes all level-1 subfolders with names starting with a to n)
Profile A + Profile B combined will replicate / backup / sync all files from c:\SourceFolder\ to X:\TargetFolder\
Profiles can be run sequentially using VVEngine. _________________ --

The filtering alphabetically would work but it will keep changing over time when I add more films and I have to cut the alphabet in 3 instead of 2... which means VV would delete so many files off each external when reconfiguring for the new alphabet split...
I just thought of something that is more of a sure thing and wouldn't force me to ever change the filters or my backups. Say I added a text file in each folder called "backup to FilmBk1" or "backup to FilmBk2". This would work perfectly because nothing would every change; if I filled up both backups I would just have to add "backup FilmBK3" into the new movie folders and get a 3rd backup drive, without affecting the first 2 backup drives.
Could I get Vice Versa to filter on that text file? Could I say: backup all folders that contain "backup to FilmBk2" to target: FilmBk2? |

Hi, that is not possible unfortunately., the filtering can only happen based on the folder name itself... could you add a tag to the folder name, directing ViceVersa to backup to FilmBk1 or FilmBk2 etc? Something like (FilmBk1) added at the end of a folder name. _________________ --

I appreciate the workaround, but it isn't really feasible. Renaming folders in a massive storage environment seems, well, it seems kinda odd, really, to suggest renaming entire file structures to accommodate a backup process.
Films > The Thin Red Line > The Thin Red Line.mp4
Films > The Thin Red Line Backup Films A > The Thin Red Line.mp4
6,000 times!
Or
Work > Client Name > client info
Work > Client Name Backup Drive 1 > client info
It's just too weird. And given the fact that Vice Versa can't deal with folders that have been moved or renamed (it actually deletes all the files on the target first, and then copies them back, even when a folder has just been renamed), well, we're talking weeks of having to re-backup all the files that are already backed-up.
In any event, file systems are rigid enough as they are, file names are limited enough in length, it's just too weird to include external backup location info in folder names.
Hopefully ViceVersa will come up with a solution in the future. |

Hi, yes, renaming folders would be strange and not really straight-forward.
I think atm the only option is to select which folder is mirrored to which drive, e.g. by name of level-1 subfolders or using file filters by folder initials. _________________ --
