|
|
Just trying out version 5.
Windows 11, 64-bit VV Pro.
With scan acceleration enabled my local sources no longer include my OneDrive directory so the scanner effectively thinks it has been deleted. This of course means it wants to delete it from the target also.
Really not good.
Switching off scan acceleration means the scanner can see my OneDrive folder again.
I can toggle between both states simply by enabling / disabling scan acceleration.
This makes VV5 unusable for me.
I can share anything more detailed privately if anyone wants to investigate this further.
Thanks. |

Hi, thank you for posting this issue. What is the path of the OneDrive folder? Is OneDrive stored on a different drive? _________________ --

Current OneDrive path:
When I re-install Windows I always deregister the default: path and reregister it on the above.
Not sure it matters since, Scan Acceleration has only become available in VV5, but I installed VV5 over the top of a VV2.5 registered install.
I am using the Synchronisation method and have tried resetting the tracking database but to no avail.
I have tried toggling all the possible Shadow Copy options that are possible whilst using the Synchronisation method but again no change.
E:\ is a separate physical drive to where VV is running from which is C:\ if that is what you are asking? |

OK, long story short: this behaviour is caused by the OneDrive Files On-Demand feature.
Info on this can be found here: https ://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/save-disk-space-with-onedrive-files-on-demand-for-windows-0e6860d3-d9f3-4971-b321-7092438fb38e
I'm thinking that this feature tricks the file system, or at least any higher level process attempting to read the filesystem, into believing that all the files in the OneDrive folder are actually there. Certainly VV Pro believes they are there because I completely reset my OneDrive folder by unlinking my PC via the local app, deleting the OneDrive folder (and its associated OneDriveTemp folder) then relinking it all up again. At this point VV5, without Scan Acceleration, believed everything was present and correct even though no files actually existed in the OneDrive folder.
The Files On-Demand feature is enabled by default so nothing is actually downloaded until you click on it.
However, whatever magic OneDrive uses to achieve this does not fool the indexer used by Scan Acceleration because when Scan Acceleration is enabled, VV5 immediately thinks none of the files exist.
This is still the case even if the files are actually downloaded. I tested this by disabling the Files On-Demand feature which caused OneDrive to download everything. At this point Scan Acceleration does work as intended but as soon as Files On-Demand is re-enabled VV5 thinks all the files are gone again even though they are all still there.
Basically, Files On-Demand renders the indexer used in Scan Acceleration worse than useless because it generates a response from VV5 that could unwittingly cause backups to be deleted.
I caught this because I run VV manually but if this process was automated, my OneDrive backup would have been nuked...
In summary, this issue is very repeatable and can be tested by scanning a OneDrive folder with Scan Acceleration enabled. Regardless of the actual state of the files, downloaded or not, VV5 will always consider the entire folder empty if Files On-Demand is enabled. By turning off Files On-Demand, VV5 will correctly reflect the actual state of the files. This is also true for VV without Scan Acceleration enabled, the real file situation will be reflected because the magic OneDrive smoke screen won't be in play.
I can imagine that the whole OneDrive magic smoke screen has been an issue of sorts for a long time but I've never experienced it because I only use VV Pro on a single machine. Falsely reporting that all files are present and correct is relatively harmless. However, Scan Acceleration doubles down on this issue by equally falsely reporting the opposite, that no files are there at all, which could lead to backup data loss.
Good luck with this. |

Would have done so sooner but I reckon I did not enable notifications for message responses, sorry. |

I am delighted to say that the build you sent me works as expected with the OneDrive "Files On-Demand" feature.
Great work guys |
