|
|
I have just upgraded to VV5 from 4, and I must say the speed to sync files between my PC (Win11) and Mac has considerably improved. I did not measure, but this is now several times faster. What seems to be much faster is the scanning of my Mac folder through the network.
I had been waiting for such an improvement for years
But... I think this can still be improved because, apparently, the scanning of the destination and the source are yet sequential. The source is scanned first; then the destination is scanned. I think both could happen at the same time for further performance improvements.
I have a past comment about this: https://www.tgrmn.com/web/forum/viewtopict6205.htm |

Hi, thank you for the feedback!
Many improvements were done in version 5 in terms of performance,
Which multithreading options are you using ? Please see profile settings -> performance.
Also depending on the number of files you are processing, Scan Acceleration could be useful.
thanks _________________ --

Yes, all multithreading options are ON.
Maybe this is just an impression because of how the progress dialog behaves. For example, in this dialog box, I can see:
Quote: | Comparing Source(s) and Target(s)...
Number of Files and Subfolders in Source: 46 173
Number of Files and Subfolders in Target: 0
|
Then the counter "Target" starts to grow. From the user point of view, we have the feeling that the target scanning happens after the source scanning, despite the multithreading option. |

I agree with you Adequat, VV's display is a bit confusing in this regard.
I can say for a fact that when I Mirror-copy from my Windows 11 PC (22H2) VV5 - Build 5004 - (64-bit), the mechanical hard disk in my Windows Server 2022 (21H2) Destination device starts to 'clatter' like mad and is clearly being read at the same time as the Source, but the VV display does not show this immediately......but my ears tell me VV5 is defo reading the Source and Destination simultaneously ! |

Hi, yes, in the log file and the output window you will see a line reading something like "pre-fetch of target enabled" and scanning of the target will start at the same time as the source... however no counter for target is shown while the source is scanned, but it is happening in the background.
Pre-fetching target will not always help in terms of performance. Almost always helps over the network, but locally sometimes it might actually slow down scanning of the source too much. _________________ --
