I've been trying out VV for a while which now has expired. I have the following issues with the product:
1. For security reasons I use Windows under a non-admin account on a daily basis, and I haven't found a way to run VV with admin authority, which is required if you wish to backup security attributes. How can I do this?
2. In order to backup my laptop, I need to create a share for the C-drive on the laptop in order for VV to be able to copy it, right? That means that I'm exposing the laptop to the rest of the network, which I have no intention to do.
3. These is so much info available on how to backup the system, but nothing that I've seen that describes the more important aspects such as file and disaster recovery. Maybe I missed something...
Nice product, but ... |

You should be able to select the ViceVersa shortcut from the menu then right mouse click and select Run As... from the menu ... you can also schedule it using VVScheduler under an admin user.

If you pull the data from another computer, yes. You can limit the share to certain users / pwd. If you push the data from the same machine no share is needed.

ViceVersa makes recovery very simple. Files are just copied to another location with ViceVersa and restoring just means copying them back. Note that ViceVersa does not make a bootable target disk, so in case of hd failure you will need to rinstall Windows and then you can copy back the files you have backed up with VV. _________________ --

Thanks for the tips. Another question while being here: Is there an easy way to recover a system to a specific point in time (like a rollback)? The archiving function lets me save varios version of individual files, but how do I handle it practically? Is this something where a "snapshot" can be useful? (Don't really understand what to do with snapshots.) |

That feature is on our product roadmap. The capability to restore at a certain point in time using the archive folder. Right now you can only do that manually (eg it is useful to restore single versions of old files if needed).
Snapshots are just 'frozen images' of live folder structures, and you can compare it against the live copy at a later date, to see what file have changed. For instance we have a folder that we do not want to change, even accidentally. We create a snapshot and periodically check the snapshot vs the folder to make sure that nothing has changed. _________________ --

Thanks again. Yet another question: I just tried out VVLauncher with "Run as soon as file changes are detected" active and find that it seems to run a continues compare instead of "waking up" when a file has changed. Is this solution caused by technical limitations in the OS? I've tested under Win2000 Pro, is the behaviour different under XP? |

Change the subject to Convinced, I think I will go ahead and buy the product. Even if there still may be some unanswered questions, this thread clearly shows that there is an active support team at TGRMN Software, which IMHO is very important for this type of software. And my tests have shown that it is far quicker than the competitive product I've been using up till now. Keep up the good work! |
