Apologies if this has been asked before but I couldn't find a related topic in the forum.
I have a suite of programs running on a VPS windows 2012 R2 server that generate data files, updating several times per minute. I want to distribute these files in real-time to remote user PCs.
I assume I need to set up VPN access for connections between the user PCs and the server, but can I use VPN targets in real-time in ViceVersa? Also, if the user is accessing the files (read-only) does this stop the replication from working?
If the answers to my two questions are: Yes VPN targets can be used and No, user access to replicated files doesn't stop the replication, then does anyone have a step-by-step guide as to how to set this up?
Thanks in advance for any help. |

Hi,
Yes, it will work over VPN. The detection part will be local on the 2012 server and the files will be pushed to the targets. If the files are open read-only on the target (i.e. 'no locking'), then that will not stop replication.
We have a real-time guide for VVEngine on this page that could be useful:

I have a few follow-up questions on this topic.
I understand that the VV Engine has to run on the server, and I assume that I have to set up a profile for each VPN target PC folder, although the source folder on the server will be the same in all cases. What does the PC user need to set up at their end in order for the file replication to work? Do they need to set up a shared folder that can be accessed by VV? And if so, how is that folder identified in the VV Engine target setting (i.e. what is the format of the target folder entry)?
Apologies for all the questions. I’ve used VPN to access server shares from a PC via Remote Desktop, but have never pushed data files from a server to a VPN client, and can’t find any detailed instructions as to how to set it up. |

yes, the share would be identified as \\computername\share\
Or you can have ViceVersa and VVEngine running on each client and pull data from the server.

But in that case, the profile that you set up on the client would have to reference the remote server as the source, and in your documentation it says that VPN sources can't be used to monitor file level changes for real-time replication, so how would you set up VV on the client to pull data from the server? |
