Hi, I am a novice user with VVEngine so please bear with me. This is a simplified test set up.

I have one folder being monitored by VVEngine on a 2016 Server using the 'Monitor Source and Run When File Changes Are Detected ' option at '--> Monitoring Level:' - 'Subfolder Level'. The folder being monitored starts empty, ie no folders/files it in.

The VV Profile is a 'Backup (Mirror Source)' job copying any folders/files to another folder on the same Volume, but with Archiving enabled ie 'Instead of deleting/overwriting Target files, move them to :', a third folder on the same Volume.

All works well if you make the folder changes at a client PC (Win 10), so if I copy a folder named 'Coyle' to the server from a PC, VVEngine detects this in ‘real time’, copies that folder to the 'Destination' folder on the Server...all good. Then I delete the 'Coyle' folder stored on the server 'Source' via the PC and again VVEngine detects this, makes an Archive copy on the Server and deletes the copy at the 'Destination' stored on the Server - just what I expected

However, if I repeat the above steps, but this time delete the 'Coyle' folder at the server via a remote session - VNC, so not from a PC, VVEngine fails to make an Archive copy on deletion of the folder but does process the actual folder deletion, deleting it in the ‘Destination’.

VV Log to follow. I assume this is not intended behaviour ? A deletion wherever it occurs should force an ‘Archive’ process to run if that’s set in the VV Profile ?

Have you had any initial thoughts per chance ?

Obviously I can't put VV Engine into 'production' if I'm unsure as to its behaviour in certain circumstances.

It may be that the situation I've described in my initial post....is just a result of my lack of experience !

Nonetheless, deletions to Network Share folders will be triggered by Business staff (at their PCs) and by ICT Admins (generally at a server or remotely connected to a server) so an Archive copy is key as part of our data recovery options for some folder sets.

Hi, sorry for delay. the archiving function for folders and real-time is a bit different when folders are not fully re-scanned. Because VVEngine and ViceVersa do not re-scan folders in real-time, when an entire folder is deleted in one step, that is not archived. Instead if files inside the folders are deleted individually, then the files are archived. Is this the behavior you are seeing? thanks!

What you describe is similar to what I am seeing, but not exactly the same position. For me complete folder deletions do cause an 'Archive run' when actioned at the client, but not if actioned at the Server.

On the basis of that behaviour I'll have to re-think the use of VVEngine as the environment it is being deployed to is so busy (in file update/creation terms) that I won't be able to tell precisely what has occurred and who 'triggered' it (ICT or staff).

Ultimately consistency is key in an Enterprise environment where we have multiple ICT Admins...because you just can't communicate these sorts of peculiarities to multiple staff all of whom start with a different level of understanding (and interest !) in the product's operation. We'll just have to revert to a Scheduled Job where the outcome is suboptimum but consistent

Hi so I can't use VVEngine if (when set to do so in the associated Profile) :

- the deletion of a folder at a Server (2016) does not cause an archive of that folder to be created, when that change is detected by VVE

but

- the same operation performed at a client (W10) does cause an archive of that folder to be created, when that change is detected by VVE

if VVEngine is inconsistent in this regard, then I can't trust it in a production environment at present. Staff numbers are 3,500...so not trivial.

I'm really sorry to say that because I'm a big VV fan....maybe there's a simple answer to resolve this...
