Hello,
I am using viceversa on a backup pc who has access to a network storage. I am backing up the data and moving modified files to the archive. So I thought ransomware is no problem for me because in the case that a trojan encrypts data everything will we available in the archive folder.
But now there is an evil version out there which infects other pcs in the lan via smb vulnerubility of version smbv1.
So my question is: If I use viceversa to access the data which should be backed up via network smb share could it be possible that my backup pc is encrypted too because I use smb samba network access via viceversa to access the files?
TIA
Best regards |

Hi,
the Wannacry malware uses a known SMB vulnerability to propagate itself from computer to computer (e.g. once a computer is infected, usually via an e-mail attachment, the virus then tries to propagate to other computers it can access over the network using SMB). So a PC can be infected from another PC that is on the same Windows Network.
Microsoft already released Windows Updates that close this issue in the SMB protocol and so if you are fully up-to-date with Microsoft Windows Updates you will not be vulnerable to be infected via SMB.
However you should never open and execute programs that come as file attachments from e-mails unless you are 100% sure where they are coming from (this has always been the case)

Is there an alternative protocol to SMB over LAN which viceversa can use? |

Hi, the SMB protocol is the base of the Windows Network (Network Shares), ViceVersa needs the Windows Shares to copy files over the network. Windows SMB implementation was now fixed by Microsoft via updates so it will not be an issue. Microsoft also released updates for old Windows versions such as 2003 and XP. _________________ --
