I have been noticing for some time that the time stamps on the files copied with VV Pro have been kind of strange. Things were being copied in our backups that I know were not touched since the last backup. So when I upgraded our workstation to Windows 10 recently I did a test. I copied all of the files off the data disk on our workstation to an external hard disk using VVPro.
I then reformatted the data disk and then copied all the files back from the external disk with VVPro. So now the two disks should have identical files with identical file date stamps. To check, I then used VVPro to copy the files back to the external disk from the workstation data disk. There should be nothing to copy because no file was touched after they were first copied from the external disk.
But low and behold there were a lot of files on the data disk that had time stamps that were earlier than what was on the external disk for the same file. Plus, there were a lot of files on the data disk that had time stamps that were older than the time stamps on the external disk. My understanding, is that the time and date stamps are preserved in a copy, and so should be the same for each file on the two disks.
To make things even more confusing, the difference in the dates for any one particular file ranged from a few minutes to a few years. It wasn't a constant offset. None of the dates had the date that the files were copied, so it was not using the copy date for anything. When I check these files, the size is always the same so you can see that they are probably the same. Plus, I know that some of these files have not been used by anyone for years.
I am copying a lot of files, approximately 800,000 in about 5.5 TB. I don't know if that would cause any problems with your program. It is very disconcerting to see my daily backup copying files that I know have not been touched for years.
I have been using ViceVersa for many years and I have seen this date anomaly pop up every once in a while on a few files here and there, but not enough to make me nervous. But lately I have been seeing thousands of files get their dates changed by VVPro and its starting to make me nervous. Plus we have started doing a lot of legal work, so correct date stamps are more important now than ever.
I am using 64bit VVPro 2.5 Build 2513. I would appreciate any help you can provide. |

Hi, that's strange, what type.brand is the target disk? could you test with a few files a copy to another disk (e.g. local disk) to see if the issue is elated to the external disk?
Also when you compare source and target in ViceVersa it shows files that are matched or not... after a full copy all files should match, can you check if this is true in your case?
