I have a number of backup jobs that are working fine however with one server in particular, i keep getting the same error when it checks the source. The logs show these two errors:
The specified network name is no longer available.
followed by:
Error scanning source folder.
Funnily enough, it continually fails on the same set of folders. If i exclude them in the job, it skips these folders and the source checking works ok, and copies across the rest of the data. But i need to include these folders in the job too, so i need to work out why it is failing on these folders.
Since it is the same folders that repeatedly cause these errors and others work fine, i'm ruling out anything hardware and/or OS based, along with network latency. I've also tried uninstalling the anti-virus software from the server too, but that had no effect. File permissions appear the same as the other folders that are working OK too.
Oh also, network friendly folder scanning is turned on.
So, any ideas what might be causing this?

Source and target are both Windows. |

That seems to work...Odd. I have other jobs with a lot more files/folders, so it can't be the amount of files that's the problem.
I think i'll try getting that copy job done, moving the data over into the correct location on the target, and then re-running the original job. I'll update here if that doesn't work. Thanks. |

It seems to be a bit hit and miss actually. That second job i created is now failing too. Sometimes the folder scanning works, but most of the time it fails. I guess the only benefit is that if you're scanning less, then there's less chance of the job failing since it doesn't run for as long.
Here's the folders that it failed on on the last 2 runs:
\\?\UNC\ae-dxb-fs1\e$\Departments\General\Jojie & Quinn\FSME administration files\Jojie\jbandian\Desktop\Jojie, 06.01.2011\Translations\Master Collection\Adobe CS4\extensions\AdobePhotoshop11-en_GB\Assets\*.*
\\?\UNC\ae-dxb-fs1\e$\Departments\General\Jojie & Quinn\FSME administration files\Jojie\jbandian\Desktop\Jojie, 06.01.2011\Translations\Master Collection\Adobe CS4\extensions\AdobeAfterEffects9en_GBLanguagePack\Assets\*.*
I looked through the failed folders for the longest filenames, and that combined with the folder path came to 236 characters. it's fairly long, although not over the 255 character limit. There's not any characters in there that i would consider unusual either.
Thanks,

I've looked into this some more and it seems like the issue was related to packet loss. It must have been entirely coincidental that it was failing on the same subset of folders. I noticed there was about 5-15% packet loss on their line and that the router had been up for 450+ days, so i scheduled in a reboot of the router out of hours and after that, there was 0% packet loss, and funnily enough the jobs worked OK following the restart too.
Wish i had looked into their network more thoroughly earlier on now...But oh well, i'll keep an eye on it, but i think this is probably resolved.
Thanks for your help. |
