I having been syncing with GoodSync as a form of backup for user data. Now I am adding another computer to the mix and have decided to reorganize the file structure and use ViceVersa to make a 100% identical copy of all of the data on the other computer - a ready to go backup. I have 22GB of data in a partition called TECHSTUF. It consists almost entirely of binaries, such as EXEs, MSIs, ISOs and some SQLs & MDFs. I tried ViceVersa in consolidation & synchronization modes to copy the TECHSTUF contents to the new computer. The comparison phase, based on size & timestamp, went crazy and nothing was copied. Ultimately, I copied the data with Windows Explorer and used Comparator to verify it.
I suspect that the task of syncing binaries could be very different from syncing user data files. For instance, you would not want to reach into an MSI and change one driver. So I am assuming that ViceVersa simply was not built for this task, but I want to check whether there are some settings I could change that would make everything right. A workable alternative would be to make a conventional backup of the binary data on the other computer, do incremental backups and then install the backups if needed. |

Hi, ViceVersa synchronize all files (binaries, text files, docs, etc) based on their timestamp or CRC hash values. The basic behavior is that if a file timestamp is different then the files must be copied to the other side. So it should work with binaries too.... thanks _________________ --

Thanks - I did not expect that reply. I couldn't have have made those errors! Well. I went back and found that I did. In one case, the user account with Admin privileges had the necessary permissions, but he was the Recovery Agent for encryption and didn't have the Personal Encryption certificate. For the binaries, I was tired and frustrated and could have made better settings. I appreciate your help. It's been a successful trial period. |
