|
|
I need to archive my files to a folder that is next to the target folder for the backup.
The backup is on a NAS server on my local wired network and the source is my local hard drive.
I am having trouble with the syntax for your archive path options.
Here is the error I'm getting when the backup runs:
[Can not create "\\?\f:\Archive\ViceVersa\Target\unc\st1-vns-net\active\Design\Archive\VNS\template_24856_KIj6AguPK2ANFnh84Y6P\site_flash\images\page7-img1.jpg_(2014-05-04_03-58-01_DEL_T).jpg.gz". ] Error.
This is not a long-path error, that I was able to solve and has a different error message.
You can see that the actual source file path is '\active\design\archive\VNS\etc.'
But Viceversa adds the unc\st1-vns-net\ prefix which I did not enter.
In addition, the path concatenated by the Archiving options page fails.
I have read your documentation thoroughly and there is not enough information provided to enable me to diagnose how your path building functions operate.
That is, the language is not totally unequivocal and without ambiguity.
Can you please explain the principles?
for example using the following tokens:
source-long-path-prefix
target-long-path-prefix
target-drive-path
target-folder-name
target-file-name
source-drive-path
source-folder-name
source-file-name
archive-source-drive-path
archive-source-folder-name
archive-source-file-name
archive-target-drive-path
archive-target-folder-name
archive-target-file-name
That would inform me precisely how you think it should work.
Thanks,
Kimball Johnson |

Hi, can you post your current profile settings that you are using ? Open the .fsf file with Notepad then copy and paste the content here. I would like to see all the archive settings used. thanks! _________________ --

Hi , these settings do not seem to match the error :
[Can not create "\\?\f:\Archive\ViceVersa\Target\unc\st1-vns-net\active\Design\Archive\VNS\template_24856_KIj6AguPK2ANFnh84Y6P\site_flash\images\page7-img1.jpg_(2014-05-04_03-58-01_DEL_T).jpg.gz". ] Error.
Were you using \\?\f:\Archive\ViceVersa\Target\ as target archive folder in previous runs?

Hmmm, your replies make me really itchy, like I think I'm getting close to some real explanations about how this app actually works.
But then, its just you asking me for some information.
I've been a programmer for more than 20 years, so if you're holding back in case you think I might not understand, please move ahead with the explanation: I think I can handle it.
I've read your help file explanations and I don't find them informative.
What I think is happening is that you seem to have a folder to folder mapping concept. Since I want to establish a whole-drive backup scheme I need to create a series of entries in the profile, one each for each of my top-level folders.
However the feature you call 'archive' is a unique capability that I have found in no other backup product. Nonetheless, I have used your product for quite a few years without any success in getting this feature to work at all.
Now I have accumulated a large body of historical work that I have organized in a structure which is very effective. And i want to be able to handle the backups in a way that they do not simply overwrite the (dang, you overloaded the term archive: what you are proposing is not generic and you should coin a unique term) historical copies.
I really don't want to try to maintain 4 terabytes of versioned history through some hoakey GIT tool. I already have VS Online to handle my code, but I produce a great deal of design and specification material. So your concept of a version-by-version-cache of compressed duplicates (how's that?) is a useful work-around.
So what I'm looking for is an explanation of how to use your path-rules syntax to manage my process.
Now I dedicate a local drive on my development machine with the primary folders that represent my active categories. On the NAS side I have to use Shares, each of which has the same folder structure as the hard drive, but it is after all just a share.
So let's put aside the issue of long-file-name-prefix until the end, since its just gonna get tacked on the front no matter what happens. And about then you can explain why maybe that prefix is implicated in the multi-replicated folder structures.
Your concept seems to be that the 'archive copies' of the backed-up files are going to be placed in 'some other folder'. However you do not anywhere describe in useful detail how to point your 'archive' process at various targets for the placement of those zipped copies.
The one thing you do say about that seems to be that you do not allow the archived copies to be stored within the container that the main backup process is pointed at. I think that makes admirable good sense.
But your documentation is ambiguous about where else those archived copies should be placed. And there seems to be some indication that the archive copies of the source might have to stored next to the source location and the archive copies of the target might have to be stored next to the target (I mean... maybe that's what you indicate).
The core advantage to your proposed system is that you offer the possibility that the archived copies will be placed in a separate location but that they will be organized hierarchically in the same structure as the source of the archive (you also overloaded source and target). That's the thing that got me interested in what? 2003? or 4?
So i have to identify that I mean the archives will mirror (another one) the hierarchy of the files that will be archived from among the files you call 'source'. And I think I'm reading your docs correctly when I say that the files existing on the target that might be overwritten will also be separately archived in another (not the same) location and will also be zipped and arranged in another hierarchy that mirrors not your 'source' but your 'target' hierarchy.
So to discuss this feature I believe it is necessary to discuss the 4 locations: the source-location, the target-location, the source-archive-location, and the target-archive-location.
So before we go on, can you please verify (yes or no is the answer I need first, then you can explain or not) that your concept contains these specific four locations?
If you will give me that answer then I believe I can explain the ambiguity in your documentation concerning whether these locations can exist just anywhere or in what combination of locations they must start and end up.
Thanks,
Kimball Johnson |

Hi, yes, the source is the source folder where source files are, the target is the target folder where target files are. The source archive is the folder where source files are moved before they are deleted or overwritten (if archiving is enabled). The target archive is the folder where target files are moved before they are deleted or overwritten (if archiving is enabled). This all works fine, but if you have multiple sources / targets, all the target and source file end up in the same archive folder, hence the option to append source / target paths to the archive folder. This way one can make a distinction in the archive folder of which of the sources or targets the files in the archive come from. _________________ --

Ok, I would appreciate it if you would be clear with me.
Your responses do not seem to intersect with my questions in any productive way.
Could you just tell me that you do not intend to help me with the specifics of what I am trying to accomplish?
otherwise, I'd appreciate a specific description of how to configure my profile that will produce the result I have described.
If you are unwilling to give me the information I need, please just say you are unwilling.
Thanks,
Kimball Johnson |
