|
|
I'm trying to navigate the various options to perform the archiving features while doing a 'backup'.
I want to be able to 'save everything' at all times.
so I want VV to update my archive folders on my NAS drive, but also save off my existing files on the NAS (target) that have been removed from my system (source) drive.
I want to be able to save the files in their original containers so your option to prepend the original folder names for each file is excellent.
Except that I cannot get it to work.
here is the path I'm using for my archived files on my source folders: \\?\f:\Archive\ViceVersa\Source\
heres the path I'm using for my archived files on my target folders: \\?\f:\Archive\ViceVersa\Target\
Neither of these paths are 'within' any of the folders I am backing up.
I am trying to comply with the (confused, incomplete, developer-scoped, and conflicting) hard option explanations that seem to indicate that the location for the archived files must be located on the same drive (as the files that need to be archived?).
this instruction is not unequivocally stated but I've tried all options so that's why I'm posting.
Here is the error I'm getting when the backup runs:
[Can not create "\\?\f:\Archive\ViceVersa\Target\unc\st1-vns-net\active\Design\Archive\VNS\template_24856_KIj6AguPK2ANFnh84Y6P\site_flash\images\page7-img1.jpg_(2014-05-04_03-58-01_DEL_T).jpg.gz". ] Error.
So the path concatenation rules you are implementing are seemingly being overwhelmed by the actual path I need to use.
This would be a good place for you to have some examples (not just one) in your docs.
I have to admit that you have the only app that really approaches a sophisticated feature set for this kind of operation.
But I have tried this several times over the past many years with VV and have never been able to get it working as I expect.
Currently I have backed off on the archiving option and I'm proceding to do a backup.
But I expect that when it is done, I'm going to face two enormous folders full of path-less files all jumbled together. And that's going to be pretty useless for anything except a single file restore.
So if you could provide a discussion about the archive options that actually explains what they are doing and why they might interfere to the extent that a professional programmer like myself might be able to succeed, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,

Hi, the archive folders are used to archive files if/when they are deleted or overwritten from source or target, see:
http://www.tgrmn.com/web/kb/item22.htm
Instead of deleting or overwriting files, ViceVersa moves them to the archive folder(s). And a postfix is appended to mark the date / time when the files were moved to the archive. _________________ --
