|

Hi,
I realize I should upgrade from 2502 BUT that requires rebuilding some major scheduled files...
Here is the problem. I have two relatively new Dell Quadcore W7Pro machines sitting side by side. I transfer GB of data in mostly large files (there is a trio of files for each audio track that are 7 kB, 46 MB, and 2 GB.
PC A is the "ingest" machine where I grab audio via analog-to-digital converters. PC B is an edit machine where I process the ingested audio.
When I run a VV script to push files across the Gigabit Ethernet link, I often see transfer speeds in the 1% or less of link capacity.
I went into each machine and tried copying in Windows Explorer a large file from each machine to a NAS unit, and both went fine at 30-40% of link capacity.
When I reboot PC B, I then get 30-40% of link capacity transfers. I tried sleep and that did not help. Today, the machine had not slept since initial power up until the 1% link rate transfer. A full "restart" always seems to solve the issue.
If you tell me an upgrade will solve this, I'll do it, but I'd rather not since everything else is working fine.
I love VV Pro, by the way, and regularly recommend it on my blog and in a booklet I co-authored for the Canadian Conservation Institute. I can't post links here or I would have. For the blog it's richardhess dot com forwardslash notes and search for viceversa.
I found that the last time I had logged in here was 2005 !!!!! and I've been using the software for about a decade now.
Thanks!
Cheers,
Richard |

Hi, that is strange... do you ever get 1% with Windows Explorer?
We had reports of situations where the ViceVersa copy speed was lower compared to Windows Explorer, so we have now added a new option to use Windows Explorer copying functionality when running ViceVersa.
The new option is there since ViceVersa PRO 2.5 Build 2507.
The new option is called use Windows native file copy, it's in profile -> performance and and it instructs ViceVersa to use the Windows Explorer native file copy to copy files, instead of its own algorithm. In certain situations, this option can improve file copy performance significantly.
Thank you for recommending ViceVersa!
Regarding the scheduling of profiles, maybe you can try the VVEngine add-on: http://www.tgrmn.com/web/vvengine/vvengine.htm , it's our best scheduler.

Thanks for the reply! I will try upgrading on the one machine where I'm having this problem when I bounce files from A to B and leave my main backup machine (C) alone.
I have not noticed slow copy with Windows Explorer, but I trust VVP more than WE for major copying but that is based on the XP days. W7 WE seems better.
Thanks! |

A followup to this. I installed the current version AND selected the Use Windows Copy option in the profile (excuse me if I have the exact name incorrect) and GOOD NEWS.
The problem did NOT repeat itself AND the copy is running at 50-60 % of link capacity! Always good!
I wonder if it will speed up the push to the NAS units (Linux/SAMBA) or if the "magic" is only W7 to W7.
This morning's first push was 23 GB...and the good news is:
-- Done: 40 (23.22GB) Err: 0 (0) Skipped: 0 (0) Tot: 40 (23.22GB) --
-- Average Transfer Rate: 54.55MB/Sec -- Elapsed Time: 7 min 15 sec
There are pauses between files and the compare phase that I did not (but the above log stat did) average in. Still, even counting pauses and compares, I averaged 43.6 % of link capacity.
Thanks!
Cheers,
Richard |
