I have a USB drive of backed up files that are compressed and encrypted.

I wanted to do a test compare/restore on another computer so that I know it is possible, but when I try to that, ViceVersa always says 'invalid encyption password provided for target'.

The test computer has an imported copy of the VV registry and a copy of the original profile, although that did force me to re-enter the encryption password. I know the encryption password is correct.

I can restore files on the original computer, but if that blows up then not being able to restore from another computer isn't any good.

I've fixed the problem. The test computer had build 2500 installed and the original computer had build 2504. It appears that version 2500 cannot decrypt files from 2504.

I searched documentation and release notes for that being a known issue and none found. Technically I find that a bit scary, because who knows what build differences might arise in the future.

Maybe it's a good idea for the backup destination device to include a copy of the installer for the VV build that was used.

Hi, version 2500 will decrypt files from 2504, no problem. However, when you move a profile to a different computer or open the same profile from a different computer, the password must be re-entered. This is to avoid that the profile password can be "stolen" and used to decrypt files. Once the password is re-entered, decryption will work fine (if the password matches obviously). thanks

Hi, well I spent over 2 hours, creating new profiles, copying existing ones, exporting/importing registries (using the VV tools) and it wouldn't work.

I installed 2504 and it was working within a few minutes, just by creating a new profile and entering the pass phrase. I didn't even have to transfer a profile or import the registry.

Something wasn't working...
