I've been re-organising my PC and want to create a new backup on a PATA disk connected to my PC through a "VIA VT6410 RAID Controller" - the PC has no IDE connectors. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit and have been unable to find compatible drivers for the RAID controller (as a RAID controller) so its just running as a connector.

Anyway, everytime I try to run ViceVersa Pro (2.5 Build 2504), I get intermittent "hangs" (everything freezes, mouse pointer disappears, etc.) until eventually the PC crashes. Upon reboot, a Windows pane pops up containing the following:-

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 2057

this is followed by further information which means little to me!

I've tried running ViceVersa Pro by Windows Scheduler 'Run' task, by using VVLauncher and by opening ViceVersa Pro and doing a 'Compare' and then backing up batches of files. The last crash was whilst trying to copy a 1Kb file from "My Favourites"!

Any suggestions? (other than to scrap the 500Gb PATA drive!)

Regards.

David

Hi, does this happen only when using that specific drive? Do you have any anti-virus software installed? thanks

I've been running ViceVersa pro to a different disk which is no longer big enough. So this is the first time I've tried to this disk configuration.

I'll try running the same back up to a SATA drive and let you know the results.

Regards.

I created an abreviated backup (using three source/target folder pairs) which I ran to a SATA disk. This worked without any problems and was very fast!

I then edited the drive letters of each target folder to that of the PATA drive and reran. After a few minutes the whole PC locked up. After waiting ten minutes to see if the lock up would clear, I pressed and held down the PC power off/on button. After rebooting, I ran a ViceVersa Pro Compare which showed that the 'lock up' had occured on a 448Mb file.

It would not seem a good idea to try using this PATA drive for backups. Its a shame because I've got two 500Gb PATA drives, but my new PC has no IDE connectors, so this 'RAID' card appears to be the only way to connect them to the PC - unless I buy a couple of external containers for them and connect via USB or Firewire. Without looking at prices, I suspect it might be almost cheaper to buy another SATA drive.

Regards.

Hi again.

Hmmmm! I tried another test. Copying this 448Gb (zip) to the PATA drive using Windows Explorer. It failed! Hung up with about 44Mb left and then the PC crashed.

I don't know what or why, but must be something to do with the way the PATA drive is connected to the PC.

I am able to open the zip file using WinZip.

Regards.

Wonder if the 448GB size is the problem for the PATA drive Question
