We have just recently evaluated and subsequently purchased ViceVersa Pro 2.5 and VVEngine. We like the product a lot for backing up our data files from our primary data center to our branch office/DR site. We are a rather small organization, and only have about 300gb of data to backup periodically, but I had a question regarding a "best practice" for our shared folders. We have two primary shared folders - "Departments" and "Users" that need to be backed up from a Windows 2008 server over our 100mb WAN link to a Windows 2008 server. I have created a single VV Profile that will run every 2 hours to backup all changed files to our DR site. This profile has two sources, the "Departments" share and the "Users" share. When a change is detected, the profile will run, but the overall backup process takes about 1.5 hours...the majority of this time is spent on the compare process, and the actual copy/delete processes take minutes. My question is would it be better to break up this one profile into multiple profiles that use the subfolders in the shares as targets as opposed to the top level folder? That way, the compare processes are done on sub-folders with less files in them. For example, the "Departments" folder has 10 subfolders, so I would create 10 profiles, and disperse the schedule between each profile by maybe 10 minutes? Is this more or less efficient? Or am I already doing things the most efficient way? |

Is most of the time used to scan the "slow" target folder?

That would probably help, however, where are most of the files changing?

No, most of the time (about 90%) is spent on comparing the source with the target. This is a one way backup...the files are only changing on the source and we use the "Backup (mirror source to target)" process. |
