I've seen a number of posts about files not being found in the shadow copy file, but none of them has been very conclusive about solutions. I now have this problem.
I've been using VV Pro for several years with Win XP very successfully, but recently upgraded to Win 7 and upgraded to VV Pro 2.5.
One of my routine jobs backs up the All Users data, which I tracked down in Win 7 to C:\Programdata (Why do they make that so difficult?). When I ran the job, it produced errors for all the files in C:\ProgramData\\Microsoft\RAC\... and C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\...
The RAC subdirectory is listed in the FilesNotToSnapshot registry key, but the Search subdirectory is not. That seems to indicate that FilesNotToSnapshot is not the entire answer to the problem.
This isn't a real problem for me, as I don't think I'm likely to need the data from either of these subfolders and can exclude them, but I'm nervous about this happening unnoticed with other things in the future that I may need.
Is it posible to get a clearer idea of what circumstances might cause this behaviour?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi,

FilesNotToSnapshot contains information on which files are not needed to be included in the shadow copy, this information is set by Windows and refers to location of temp files normally. There's no need to backup these files and they can be excluded in the ViceVersa profile too.

Regarding the other location, are you creating the shadow copy before or after comparison ? (see profile settings -> advanced settings). If after, it could be that the files were removed before ViceVersa could start the copy.

thanks

I get this if I run the standard 'Compare and Execute' manually. I think that does the comparison before making the Shadow Copy, doesn't it?

It's consistent - if I run the profile again immediately, the same number and size of files are again not found. It would seem strange if they were being removed before the Shadow Copy was made and re-created afterwards, so it looks to me as though they're being omitted from the Shadow Copy for some reason.

I just tried on my Windows 7 laptop and I do get the same errors.

While the RAC folder is excluded in FilesNotToSnapshot , the Microsoft Search data folder is not... I tried to search for more info on Google, but could not find anything about it: I only found other users complaining about the same issue.

However, I think this folder can be safely excluded from the backup, since it contains a collection of indexes used for file searches in Windows.

If you find more info on these files, let us know!

thanks

If you're fairly confident that those folders are the only ones affected, I think I'll just exclude them and ignore it. As you say, I can't thnk that their contents are ever likely to be useful, anyway.

Many thanks,

Mike

Hi, another option to try is to instruct ViceVersa to create the shadow copy before comparison (normally it is created after comparison). The option is in profile settings -> advanced settings -> details (second button from top).

thanks

I tried this again making the shadow copy before the comparison.

The ...\Search files were not included in the backup, but nor were there any error messages. That means for sure that they are not included in the shadow copy, doesn't it?

So the errors can be avoided either by filtering them out or by making the shadow copy first but, if you did really want them included, tough luck!. Another cunning Microsoft plot Wink.

Thanks again for your help.

Yes. And that would be OK if the files were also listed in the FilesNotToSnapshot registry key, but for some reason they are not... Question
Anyway I am pretty sure these files are not needed for a backup.
