Hi,
I'm finding that even with \\?\ as the path format in the source & destination and Archiving folder.... when the archived versions expire and it goes to "deleting old archived copies" it fails with the error "can't delete path longer than 259 characters"
Also with the latest build of 2.5 that supports drive names instead of paths - does this method of path support long file names?
Thanks in advance. |

Hi
this \\?\ works if you have the drive name in the path ( \\?\C:\FolderName )
but my target destination is a UNC path (it starts with \\)
How do I handle this for a long folder path ?
Thanks fro help

If you have \\computer\share\ , use \\?\UNC\computer\share\
Use \\?\UNC\ instead of just \\?\ for UNC paths, that is replace the starting \\ with \\?\UNC\

If I add the \\?\ to my backup and archive folder names, will this change anything about the folder structure and/or naming, or is it totally transparent? Also, do I need the \\?\ on source folders which might contain long path names when I'm only doing a backup, not a sync?
Background: the only real issue is that I'm getting errors in the log on moving files from backup to archive, and I'd like to eliminate errors so that I know from the subject of the notification email whether I need to take a closer look at the results. The files involved don't matter and I could just exclude them, but that's playing whack-a-mole and I don't know when or where it will happen again. I could change the names of my folders from VVbackup and VVarchive to B and A, and turn off the "append source/target path to archive" option, but those only make the error less likely, not impossible. Since VV provides this feature, I'd rather use it. But I don't want to turn it on and find out that VV fails to recognize the existing folder structure.
Thanks,

Hi, it is transparent. If you are using a tracking databases for file sync, ViceVersa will ask to reset it. thanks _________________ --

Can the 259 character functionality just be built into the GUI? like a selectable option to ignore and still copy files when the character count exceeds 259 and or a option to not copy them but write them to the log. |

+100. Seriously. This issue has been around for 6 years. The least it could have done is a checkbox that fixes the path so that this just works for users. |

TGRMN Software wrote: | Hi, for which source / target folders would you like to enable the long path feature? thanks |
When I point the source to the actual folder it picks up the files but I get 259 characters limit message even though I use \\?\ switch, If I use UNC path it creates the location but cant find the files
Target is pointing to another network backup drive mapped on the server
Thanks for help |

Hello, use the long paths notation for all sources and targets and archive folders if needed. If you want to send your profile to support @ tgrmn . com we can check it for you. thanks _________________ --
