It is a big problem for me!

I agree with you guys, the 256cars limitation is a big issue here...

Good news this version is now available. However - when it is installed, should it wipe out the registration details, requiring them to be re-added.
Also, and more importantly, installing taking the defaults appears to remover the scheduled jobs. Is this as expected?

Thanks

Oops - my mistake on the scheduler. The schedule details are in fact retained (don't ask). However, the question regarding registration information still stands.

Hi - if you do not uninstall version 2.0.0.8 before installing version 2.0.0.9 the registration info is retained.

PostPosted: Mon Dec 12, 2005 7:52 am    Post subject: Long filenames syncs still have issues ... Reply with quote

Hi guys,

Firstly, congratulations on what is the most near-perfect software in this category. I am an IT consultant, and have been searching for ages for a tool that will do correct bi-directional synchronisation of files and folders to external USB drives, and also handle the long file-name issue.

In Windows, it is possible to rename a parent folder (when re-classifying documentation for example) to a longer name which can sometimes cause its children to become un-readable through explorer as the path is now too long. The data is still present though, and renaming the parent folder back to a shorter name allows you to recover this data.

When setting up backup solutions for clients, I like to know that ALL data (even if the path is too long is being backed up)

I tested VV 1 ages ago, and found it could not handle long paths. I have been using other sync software for that reason alone. However I do like many of VV's features, especially the new Shadow copy feature in VV2

I have since retested with the trial version of VV2 (2.0.0.9), and have found that whilst using the '\\?\' prefix allows long paths to be backed up, it still does not imo function correctly when performing a mirror or sync operation.

ie if I backup '\\?\C:\source\a-very-long-pathname (>256 characters)' to '\\?\C:\dest\a-very-long-pathname (>256 characters)' it works fine.

However, if a folder in '\\?\C:\source\a-very-long-pathname (>256 characters)' is renamed, and a sync is re-run with the 'Mirror source to dest' option, the
'\\?\C:\dest\a-very-long-pathname (>256 characters)' copy cannot be deleted by the sync engine, resulting in two copies in the dest folder, the original and the renamed copy. This obviously invalidates the integrity of the mirrored or synchronised information ....

This is a key feature for me, and so far I've only found two other bits of software which do this correctly whilst also providing an accurate bi-di sync, but they do not have the 'usability' factor I have got from the VV trials.

Sorry about the long post, but any chance this could be resolved? I would dearly like to be able to reap the benefits of the advanced features of VV2, however cannot warrant doing so unless the long paths issue is fully resolved. So far I have only tested this issue with a mirror backup, but where I actually require this to work the most is with bi-di syncing.

Many thanks

the Target path does not work if more than 256 char.

Is this the correct format?

No, you should use:
\\?\UNC\myserver\folder

I am using
ViceVersa Pro 2 - Build 2010

An di still have this problem of longpath more than 259 - it says... and stops. It is indeed a problem. Is there a way to go around - and/or when a build will solve this problem. ?

Thanx
Robert

Hi,

I'm running build 2014 and copying long file names works fine in the ViceVersa GUI using \\?\E: or \\?\UNC\server\share

However, if I save my profile and try to run it in VVEngine 1.1, I get the message: Folder is not accessible: \\E:\

Any clues as to how to fix this?

Unfortunately VVengine does not handle \\?\ yet when monitoring folders in the profile schedule. It will be supported in the next release.

When will the new version be available?

In the meantime, what are my options? The profile with \\?\ won't even run in VVLauncher.

Thanks
