I'm a long-time user of VV2 Pro on WinXP, where I user it to keep files in sync between laptop and ReadyNAS file server. Overall happy. I get transfer speeds of the 1Gb ethernet of around 10-12MB/s (dropping to 100KBs for many small files)
Upon upgrading to Win7, I decided to give VV2.5 a try, in the hope it fixes the 'cannot change attributes' error I get when syncing SVN working copy files.
VV2.5 (trial mode) works fine: comparison is extremely fast (faster than VV2), but transfer speeds is extremely unpredictable. It starts off with 8-10MB/s, but quickly slows down to 10kB/s, even for large files.
Also, creating a VSS takes much longer than under XP.
I already excluded the process from my virus scanner (MS SE). |

Hi,
re file copy speed make sure the process priority is set to Normal and not Idle in profile settings -> performance

This task is performed by the Windows Volume Shadow Copy service, not by VV: have you found that it is faster in VV 2.0 on Windows 7 compared to 2.5 or faster on 7 compared to XP in general ?

Things have improved suddenly after 3(!) reboots of my windows machine. Taking the VSS snapshot still takes 3-4x longer than on my XP machine, but the file copying in VV2.5 is much faster now. It seemed that VV took 2-3 seconds to access each file before starting to copy.
Still like 20% slower than on my original XP+VV2 setup, but the 'cannot change attributes' problem has disappeared with VV2.5, so I'll probably stick with that.
Copying 60GB (180000 files) took about 11 hours. A direct folder copy from explorer between the same destinations took about 5 hours. Any idea where the overhead is?
FYI:
- VV2.5 was running in Normal priority.
- I haven't tried VV2 on Win7. I installed VV2.5 directly |
