I found a couple of other threads on this issue with no resolution posted. We've got a critical Hyper-V server that's not backing up due to this issue.

Win2008 R2
No mapped drives
VVP 2.5 b2501, just updated to 2502 and same issue.
Running as administrator

When enumerating the VSS writers via "Select VSS Writer/Component" VV attempts to build the list for a few seconds then returns the error:
"VSS Writers listing failed. E_UNEXPECTED"

"VSSAdmin list writers" works fine, no errors

Relevant VVP log entries:
2011-02-11 03:00:16 : Initializing writer metadata...
2011-02-11 03:00:16 : ERROR: Win32 call "GetVolumePathNameW((LPCWSTR)path.c_str(), WString2Buffer(volumeRootPath), (DWORD)volumeRootPath.length())" failed.
2011-02-11 03:00:16 : - GetLastError() == 2
2011-02-11 03:00:16 : - Error text: The system cannot find the file specified.
2011-02-11 03:00:16 : [ERROR] Volume Shadow Copy creation failed. E_UNEXPECTED
2011-02-11 03:00:16 : Exit Code: 2. Execution not completed. [ERROR]

Hello,

can you please send the entire log to support@tgrmn.com ? We will probably have to send you a modified ViceVersa version to gather additional info.

thanks

Update: a stored Hyper-V machine that’s been disabled for some time had the VHD file stored on the F drive which doesn’t exist. After removing the virtual machine entry, the backup job is running successfully.

I am having the same issue but don't have any mapped or virtual drives. Here is the log entry showing the error:

2011-07-13 09:31:16 : Creating Volume Shadow Copy for source volume(s)...
2011-07-13 09:31:16 : Gathering writer metadata...
2011-07-13 09:31:16 : (Waiting for the asynchronous operation to finish...)
2011-07-13 09:31:19 : Initializing writer metadata...
2011-07-13 09:31:19 : ERROR: Win32 call "GetVolumeNameForVolumeMountPointW((LPCWSTR)volumeRootPath.c_str(), WString2Buffer(volumeName), (DWORD)volumeName.length())" failed.
2011-07-13 09:31:19 : - GetLastError() == 1
2011-07-13 09:31:19 : - Error text: Incorrect function.
2011-07-13 09:31:19 : Volume name not found for volume mount point: \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume1\
2011-07-13 09:31:19 : [ERROR] Volume Shadow Copy creation failed. E_UNEXPECTED

I would really like to get this working as advertised, any help is greatly appreciated!

I have this exact same error on a new install of Windows 7 64-bit running ViceVersa PRO 2.5 Build 2505 64-bit.

Can anyone help?
