Hi all,

I have a problem with pathnames exceeding 259 chars.

Copying file \\192.168.0.1\Data\... [Path with more than 259 characters. Can not copy "\\192.168.0.1\Data\...".] [ERROR].

I have had this problem before and fixed it by adding \\?\ to the pathnames...but you can't add \\?\ to the beginning of an existing UNC pathname Sad

My current source is:
\\192.168.0.1\Data\
and target:
\\?\E:\Data\

I've tried the suggested \\?\UNC\192.168.0.1\Data but it does not work.

I can't believe that a product as good as VV does not allow me to copy pathnames exceeded 259 chars from a target...hopefully I've just got something wrong :-S

I'm running Version: ViceVersa PRO 2.5 Build 2501 64-bit (SN229) [Registered][Server]

Any ideas?

Troy.

Use:
\\?\UNC\192.168.0.1\Data\
instead of
\\192.168.0.1\Data\

For unc paths, \\?\UNC\ must be attached, instead of \\?\

(As per my original post) This does not work - it claims the resource can not be found Sad

Thanks for your post...I haven't seen this tool but will check it out.

I've had this same issue several times now on different setups and version of Windows. It always seems to be caused when the source/dest containing the long file names is on a different computer.

I'm not sure why others haven't had this problem or why it hasn't been rectified Sad

It's at the top of this topic...just a couple of posts up.

This always happens (I recommend VV to many of my customers) when I try to use VV across a network - it seems to happen when the target pathname is too long (the target being on a different computer).

I have the exact same problem. New install of VV on a 2008 R2 server in a domain. Backups work fine with normal server path: \\server\share, but file names are too long, especially in the archive.
UNC path for NAS does not work.
Local UNC: \\?\E:\ works fine.

I'd appreciate any guidance.

What type / model is the NAS? Sounds like the NAS does not support long paths.

The NAS is a QNAP 659Pro+. I'm 99% sure it supports UNC. If I map the share to a local letter and then use UNC to the drive letter, it works fine. No file length errors. Grumble. I just really do not want my automated backup process to be restricted to using a drive letter (logged in). I found some people talking about Windows 2008 R2 needing a registry switch to enable UNC. I made that switch, it didnt' help.

Still stumped.

Hi, does it fail with all UNC paths or only when using the long path notation \\?\UNC\ ? It could be an issue with not supporting \\?\UNC . Does it work OK if mapping a drive and using the long path notation, e.g. \\?\G:\

thanks

Yes, the drive mapping notation works: \\?\G:\

No, the long notation does not work: \\?\UNC\

I'm just trying to setup an automated script that runs when the server is not logged in. Like I said, I'm pretty sure the Qnap is capable. I'm also pretty sure 2008 R2 is capable. I just need to figure out a way to enable it.

Let me know if you think of anything.
Thanks.
