|
|
I am working on migrating my vvpro2.5 (latest version) from a windows XP workstation to a windows XP 64 workstation ..... time for lease replacement.
So I installed VVpro (64 bit) on my new machine and copied the profiles over as well.
My profiles open just fine but no longer connect to the network sources. I have discoverved that any passwords that were stored inside my profiles seem to be wrong now (I store the network credentials for file access inside my profiles).
Is it possible that the password algorithm is calculated different on 32 vs 64 bit OS? Or is it different between any operating systems (XP, 7, Server, etc)? I wouldnt really care if I had just a few profiles but I have many (>200) ...... |

Hello
Profile passwords are linked to a certain machine for security reasons and must be re-entered if a profile is copied to a different machine. This is done to avoid that someone can copy your profiles and use it on different machines and steal the password.
I understand that's a big pain for > 200 profiles! Maybe you can re-enter the password for one profile and save the profile. Then open the profile file .fsf with a text editor and copy the password entry to the other profiles using a program that can replace text in multiple files (assuming that the password is the same for all profiles).

I can somewhat understand the idea behind machine specific encrpytion ..... lets discuss a few things:
1. Is it possible to turn off this machine specific encrpytion?
2. In my case, in am copying files from many different network sources to the local machine. I would prefer to do this all in one profile with multiple sources/destinations but I run into a problem with this .... The network credentials force me to enter the following:
a. Username with domain reference
b. Password
c. Network path
So lets try to paint a picture ...... we have our local machine, a remote machine named "PCA", another remote machine named "PCB", and a final remote machine named "PCC". Lets assume all 3 remote machines have the same LOCAL username/password. So lets say I enter the username and password in their respective boxes, and I enter "\\PCB\RemoteShare" in the Path box (because I have to enter something). Also in my profile I create source and destination entries for all 3 remote machines. When I try to run this profile I always get access denied errors for "PCA" and "PCC". If I change the Path to "\\PCC\RemoteShare", then "PCA" and "PCB" will return access denied.
How do I get VV to use the same credentials for multiple network locations on computers with different names? Let me know if you would like this to be a seperate topic; but it is kinda related to the customer needs and how the machine specific password encrpytion work. |

Hello,
if you move profiles between machines you'll need to re-enter the password, it's a security measure to make sure your password can't be copied by copying the profile file.

There was a clear answer on the machine specific passwords .... and if you think about it, it does make sense. I can see some room for improvement to better deal with customer's varying needs but it isnt that bad.
There has been no response in regards to the second related post coming from me ..... at the moment I dont know a way to use a single profile to connect to multiple network locations requiring credentials.
This would be a big help because I am copying many files from remote to local but I would like to do many machines with a single profile.
Should I submit a seperate topic? |
