I am having trouble getting files on the target side to delete.

I am backing up to a WD MyBook NAS device. Backup of new/changed files is working nicely.

I had been using another backup program and had an existing backup on the target drive. I created profiles in VVPro that match the profiles in the old backup software with a few exceptions. There are some files/directories on the source that I will not be backing up anymore. I have added these as excluded items in my VVPro profiles. These exceptions are not being deleted from the target when I run the VVPro job.

Additionally, To test this, I created a new directory on my C drive and did a backup. (this directory had not been previously backed up). The directory backed up fine, but when I modified the profile to exclude this directory and then ran it again, it did not delete from the target.

Any ideas? My guess is that these directories will not delete because the exclude rule is just bypassing them altogether. Do I need to delete all of these directories manually? Is there a way to get them to "sync"/delete without deleting manually so I can save quite a bit of work?

Please advise.

Many thanks,
Jennifer

I think I figured this out.

Answer: Appears to be 'Yes'.
I created a new directory on the target, and did a new backup. I presume the exclude is doing what it is supposed to do and ignoring the excluded selections completely, therefore not deleting them.

Answer: I'm going to assume the answer to this one is 'No'.

Will someone please confirm my findings.

Thanks,

Hello Jennifer,

Yes, I can confirm, when files are excluded they are completely ignored by ViceVersa: VV won't delete them from the target if they are excluded. The only way is to :
1) use a new target and start with an empty target
2) delete them manually
3) there is a complex method where you first use a new target and use the filters, then backup (mirror source to target) the new target vs. the old target without filters and this will get rid of all excluded files in the old target. Finally you can discard the new target.

thanks

Thanks for the reply.

For the smaller of the two backup profiles (C drive), I just created a new target.

For the larger backup profile (E drive - all my files/data), I am manually deleting the directories that I don't need on the backup/target.

I heart my NAS device, and it is great for maintaining a backup (of all the computers in our home); however, initial/first backup to this device was VERY slow because the throughput is completely lame (which is why I was trying to avoid re-creating the targets). I had to use a crossover cable and connected directly to each PC to do the initial backups when I first got the device, since it doesn't have USB to PC capability.

OT: Just a note to anyone looking to purchase a NAS device... Spend the extra money and get a "good" one (seriously) - especially if you have massive amounts of data. The throughput makes all the difference in the world. Otherwise, stick to USB connectivity. Smile

Thanks for the quick response to my post. Appreciate the info.

Jennifer
