Hello,
I am a registered user of VV Pro 2 and I am trying to use Archiving to get a *COMPLETE* copy of a backup folder but it won't quite do that. I use a Backup Mirror script to copy the files from a Source folder to a Target folder. This ensures that the Target is a complete copy of all files in the Source folder. But I then want to keep a number of archive copies of the Target folder which is what the Archive facility does. The problem is that if a file in the Target didn't change in the Source, that file will not be deleted or overwritten in the Target when the backup runs and the Archive facility will therefore not copy/move that file to the Archive folder. I need an Archive folder to be complete copy of *ALL* of the files in the Target folder. (These folders contain all of the files that make up a VMware Virtual Machine. If I need to restore a VM from an Archive I need *ALL* of the files that comprise the VM or the VM will not run!). I realize that any file "missing" from the Archive folder is in the Target folder and can be manually fetched from there. But when there are multiple days worth of files in the Archive folder figuring out what's missing (and therefore must be fetched from the Target folder) is time consuming and error prone. Plus, from a data integrity point of view, it is best to have full copy of all of the files in the Archive just in case something happens to the Target folder!
A partial solution would be to not use the Archive facility but to run a Backup Mirror script to backup the Target folder to an Archive folder before running the original scrip that does a Backup Mirror from the Source to the Target. Since this is a Mirror we can be sure we have a full and compete set of files in the Archive folder. But this approach doesn't allow for keeping multiple days worth of Archives.
How can I force an Archive operation to move *ALL* files from the Target to the Archive and retain the ability to have multiple days worth of Archives (through the renaming of the files as they are moved to the Archive or some other means)?
Thank you.
