I have recently updated my main desktop system to a Windows 7 64-bit system from a 32-bit XP Pro system. I use VV Pro to Backup (Mirror) about 60,000 files (about 120GB of data) across a gigabit network to a server running Windows XP Pro 32-bit in my home.

Prior to upgrading, the file comparison process would take about 90 seconds on the first run (15-20 seconds on subsequent runs) and I would get about a 20-25 MB/s transfer rate for the actual backup process. After switching to Windows 7 (and the 64-bit VV Pro) the file comparison process now takes about 8-10 minutes (EVERY run), however I still get 20-25 MB/s during the actual backup process.
    Miscenallaneous Information:
    Process Priority is/was Realtime
    I am using UNC paths
Comparison Method is/was 'Size and Timestamp'
Network Friendly Folder Scanning, Buffer Size, and Logging have no affect on comparison performance

Since my actual network file transfer rate has not deteriorated, the problem seems to only be in the comparison process. Do you have any recommendations?

Sorry for the delay!

Is the scanning of the remote folder over the network the bottleneck ?

thanks

Yes, that's where ALL of the abnormal delay takes place.

Thanks for the response!

Hello

this must be an issue with the Windows network which VV uses to scan the folder... do you have any other computer you can try against over the network? Is this a Wired or Wireless connection?

Also try to put the Process Priority to Normal

thanks

I have much the same problem. My laptop runs 32 bit Win7. My office server runs 2003 Small Business Edition. File comparison flies; the laptop reads files off the server faster than it does from its own hard drive. But at home, the same process takes forever. The internal drive is read quickly, but the files on the server take 10-15 minutes to read, as compared to 2-3 minutes on the office server. The home server is running XP Pro. I have tried optimizing the cache and priority settings on the home server to favor server vs. workstation; no improvement. In VVPro I have set process priority to above normal and played around with the transfer buffer setting. Any ideas?

Could be due to XP vs 2003 Server performance?

I suppose that is possible, but the comparison on the server is better than 10 times faster. Hard to believe that the server is that much faster than the xp machine.

Hi, as a test try a dir /s command from the laptop to both 2003 and XP and try to compare execution time.
