I haven't done a whole lot of research into this, mostly because the first few products I looked into couldn't handle this type of request, so I gave up. However, a friend recommended VV, so I thought I'd ask here.
Here's my scenario - we have a server with a shared folder containing several hundred subfolders, all containing backup files from customer sites. This folder is shared by the three service techs, and accessed from their desktop machines when we are working in the office, and logging into customer sites remotely. In addition, each service tech has a laptop that is used during actual site visits. Right now it is each tech's responsibility to take any back up files made to their laptop while on site anbd transfer them to the main server upon their return to the office. As you can guess, this doesn't always happen in a timely manner.
The other products I've looked into could handle the syncronization alright, but couldn't handle the need for the folders on the server to remain shared - in order to get them to work, I would literally have to create multiple copies of each folder/subfolder for each user and syncronize them all - something that effectively tripled the amount of data stored, and was impractical.
Can VV do this? |

Basically, I need to not only sync the folders of three laptops to the server, I still need to be able to share access to the folders on the server amongst several different desktop computers.
Other products I looked at could only do that by creating a copy of the server folder on each of the desktops I needed access from OR locking access of the server folder to only one user at a time. Neither option was/is a practical solution for me.
And I suppose I should add something else - except for a few folders, syncronization should be one way for most of the folders - that is, data from the laptops gets copied to the server, but not from the server back to the laptops. |
