I am attempting to understand the 'Tracking Database' function as there is little information in Help and on-line.

I am using the 'Synchronization' method to keep two backup USB drives the same. Files are added and amended on both drives between synchronization and I have setup Tracking Databases on all profiles.

I understand that the prime purpose of the db is to speed-up runs after the first.

As another, unanswered post comments

when a set of files gets moved (eg to a new folder) in the source, VV deletes the old ones on the target then recopies the new ones.

I often do this to reorganise the structure of the tree on the drives and, now manually move folders on both drives to save much time taken in deleting and copying across.

Do I need to reset the db everytime I do this before running VV again?

Hello

The tracking database is needed only for the synchronization method.

It keeps track of the status of files in source and target and VV uses it to establish what files have been changed / deleted.

thanks
