I read in one of the FAQ's (I think) that although VV copies everything including program files to the target, it is not bootable.
I am working under the assumption that my server WILL fail, and I need to be able to take everything from my mirror backup and run it on a new machine. Will I need to install an operating system on the new server and then copy my mirror image to the new server?
I am the closest thing our small company has to an IT department, and my degree is many years out of date, so please give it to me in the simplest terms, lol. |

Yes, ViceVersa is mainly used to copy data files, which are the files that cannot be recovered in case of a problem. Should the server fail, you'll need to re-install the OS and main applications, then you can copy the files back in their original location with ViceVersa.

Ok, so I have a new operating system, what about the programs I use on a daily basis? I use a Geac/Libra application that hasn't had updates since 1999, will ViceVersa copy that program in a usable format? Granted, the best option would be to replace that program with a newer version, but I really don't believe that will happen. I will need to be able to use that program imediately when I copy files to the new system. I have two workstations using that program and updating information on the server daily. |
