|
|
I mostly use VV to copy from my to an external hard drive. To protect against the loss of the external hard drive, I usually compress and password protect the backup copy.
While I have no problem comparing the original with the copy (it finds new files and files that have changed), if I try to do a reverse comparison, VV thinks that every file on the copy is different from every file in the original.
is this the design of the program or am I doing something wrong? if it is the design of the program, I should be able to compare the copy with the original.
Thanks |

First, I don't use VV to synchronize, I use it to back up.
I just have to switch the target and source. In either case, VV will show the differences. When I backup from my regular hard drive to my compressed drive, for example, if I added 2 files and modified 3 others, VV works, no problem. But the window showning the compressed files, shows all the ENC files as not present on the original hard drive.
However, if I compare the opposite way, VV aborts because the files do not have the ENC extension.
if I password protect and compress my files, I would like to be able to compare both ways. |

I haven't gotten a definitive reply.
In other words, it does not seem as if I could synchronize my files if I compress and encrypt them. Am I missing something?
Thanks, |

Let me provide a simple illustration.
I have files on my laptop, say FILENAME001.doc through FILENAME100.DOC.
if I compare that with a link external hard drive, the external hard drive will show nothing in comparison window. If I then replicate the laptop with compression and encryption, the external hard drive will have FILENAME001.doc.gz.enc through FILENAME010.doc.gz.enc.
if I modify three of the files, the compare window (Source) on the left will show those 3 files as modified. However, on the right (Target), all the *.gz.enc files will show up as not existing on the source (which is true because those files are not encrypted or compressed).
If I did a synchronization, VV would copy the encrypted files from the target back to the source although I do not want them there.
VV should recognize that the gz.enc files in the target are exact duplicates of the noncompressed non-encrypted files in the source (or at least give me an option to compare the source and the target and ignoring the press and or encrypted files if the original file exists in the source and has not been changed. |

You should tell VV that the target folder has compressed and encrypted files in the profile settings -> compression / encryption , then VV will match FILENAME001.doc with FILENAME001.doc.gz.enc etc

Not sure if I understand. I already do that in order to compress the files. I check off that the target will be compressed and encrypted.
VV figures correctly which files on the source have changed, but incorrectly shows the compressed files on the target as not existing on the source.
Although that is technically true, the exact uncompressed and unencrypted file does exist on the source.
In other words, the target shows the encrypted and compressed file as not existing on the source. If I selected one of those files on the target I assume it would copy the encrypted file back to the source, so there would now be two files on the source FILE001.DOC and FILE001.DOC.GZ.ENC. |
