|

I've been using VVP with the VVengine for the last year to mirror two NAS boxes across our 10/100 network. Typically I'll get anywhere from 2.5MB/sec up to as much as around 5 MB/sec throughput depending on what else might be being copied to one of the NAS boxes. I have the profile set to Process Priority Realtime, Speed is 100 and I have the largest buffer size that is available. The PC is running Windows XP SP2.
Recently I moved the entire process to another computer that is similar in age and resources, although not exactly the same. I have the exact same profile running with the same settings. I have more than enough RAM and don't see any stresses on this new system. It's only app is VVP. I am seeing consistent speeds of around 2.5 MB/sec no matter what's going on. Although this is no lower than what I saw on the first box, I don't see any of the higher speeds throughout the day. I know that the boxes aren't exactly the same, but wondered if the OS might make a difference? |

Hello,
The OS should not make a difference, but the file sizes can make a big difference. The smaller the files to copy, the slower the copy will be, as the overhead of opening/closing files changing/checking time stamps etc becomes significant. Maybe in the first box you are copying larger files and while copying those files you are seeing the 'spike' to 5MB/s ?

Actually the files are quite large... some of them being as large as 50 GB. But it's not the speed itself that I have a question on, but the apparent overall drop in speed when I went to the new server. As I stated in my question I could see transfer rates as low as 2.5 MB/sec, but would also see sustained transfer rates in the 5 MB/sec range with the old computer running XP, but now with Server 2000 I am seeing basically 2.5 and thats about all. |
