|
|
We have five computers: Server, A, B, C, D.
Server –A-B-C are in constant use, heavy traffic. For this reason, I installed VVPro2 build 2008 on D, because of low use. Essentially, it copies just critical files from Server, A, B, and C to a pair of external drives on D. [two of them for safety]
However, reading your document #33 about VSS/VSC that states:
•The file being copied must be on a local disk, not on a network disk.
Apparently, my plan won’t work. The Server has one critical business application that must use VSS because it won’t copy without shadow copies. [I had it set to copy at 3 am when the application is off, but I learned through a very painful and expensive lesson that this does not work] This FoxPro application simply will not allow copies. Must have VSS.
So, should I remove VV Pro from D and install it on the Server? |

I guess this was answered on another thread. If VSS is needed, then VV has to go on the server, or at least the computer where the VSC files are located. |

Yes, you will need to install VV on the server to use VSS.
Make sure you test this! Make a copy and then try a restore.
Rotate your critical file backup by making a backup every day to a different target. Suppose c:\folderA\datatobackup\ is your source and Z:\backupfolder\ is your target.
Setup a profile with
source c:\folderA\datatobackup\
target z:\backupfolder\<dayofweek>
so that every day of the week the backup will be on a different folder and you have multiple recovery points in case of failure.
But most important, try a restore at least once to make sure your backup is OK. This is very important when backing up databases with open files.
Also check the Windows Event Viewer to see eventual error / warning / info messages from the database application. _________________ --
