I have several computers that record television programs during the day. They each feed their own external USB 500GB drive.

I'm installing a 6TB raid system later this week to export the files to on a weekly basis. My question is what method should I use to do this. My concern is that no files ever get deleted. This is an archive and everything needs to be saved.

I will be using the scheduler so the moving can take place after midnight when no recording is taking place. My hope is I can set this once and have it work in the background without intervention... but how to do it?

Would I allow the files to simply build up in one set folder on the 500GB drive and then have VV move whatever is there using the Replication | Augment Target method? Is this the safest way to do it?

Please advise.

Do you need to keep all files also on target? You could use the <date> folder variable on target , i.e. x:\backup\<date> ... <date> is expanded to today's date, so each week you would be copying files to a different target folder. thanks

Yes, I want all target files to be left untouched. It would be best if each weeks files had their own folder since once the files are removed from the local drive (manually by me) the system begins the labeling from 001 again.

That is,
D:\Cartoons001.mpg for Monday,
D:\Cartoons002.mpg for Tuesday... and so on

Remove the files at any point and the labeling will start again at 001 for the very next recording. This makes it impossible to place the files in the same folder because there are now (apparently) duplicates.... even though they are not and the creation dates are all different.

I assume I need to enable Archiving under Profile Settings, correct?

But where do I go from here. What Method do I use.

Can you be a bit more specific and clarify what I need to do to make this happen?

Thanks!

Hello

I would not use the archive feature, instead I would use the backup method and use a rotating target , e.g. x:\backup\<date>\ ; literally use <date> in the target, which is expanded with the current date each time you run ViceVersa. thanks

OK. So see if I have this correct, please:

I have a folder on the local drive called D:\VideoFiles that the recordings are being dumped into daily. So when I set up the Compare screen in Vice Versa I have the Source as D:\VideoFiles and the Target (R for the Raid) as R:\VideoFiles\<date>\.

Question: You say to use Backup as the method but this will copy ALL the files (new and old) to the Target folder for that week. I may not always
be able to clean up the old files... or I may want to leave them on the local drive for a time.

Is there a way to have only the NEW files that have been added copied to that weeks Target folder? Would that be Replication (Augment)?

Both methods will copy all files that are still left in source to target , since the target will always be an empty folder.

thanks

So are you saying there is no way to copy ONLY the new files for that week unless I manually make a folder and place those new files in there?

Are there any other suggestions you can offer?

Hello

you could use file filters to only include files modified in the last 7 days, see profile settings -> file filters -> date / time filters

thanks
