Problem: Windows Explorer, and occasionally other processes, will freeze when I execute a profile that DOES NOT use the "Copy directly to destination file" advanced option while copying a file to a remote (via the Internet) site.
Scenario: Execute a profile that DOES have "Copy directly to destination file" option checked, target drive is a WebDrive FTP configured drive. Open "My Computer", everything opens and displays fine. Use same profile, but uncheck the "Copy directly to destination file" option, execute the profile, then open "My Computer" window. Window remains all blank (white) or hangs after clicking scroll bar until current upload to remote site completes.
Another anomoly related to this issue. Webdrive will normally allow 2 consecutive uploads to complete. When I have the ""Copy directly to destination file"" option unchecked, it only does 1 upload at a time. This is not a major issue, but weird.
Of course none of this would matter if the file copy/upload was to a local target. But because it is a remote target and the file being copied is large, the hang occurs until the upload/copy completes to the remote site.
Have showed this in a shared desktop session to the WebDrive people, and they think it might be ViceVersa Pro related. Which makes sense. Why would Windows Explorer "My Computer" window hang when "Copy directly to destination file"" is unchecked, and not hang when it is checked? |

Hello
I suspect this issue could be related to WebDrive FTP, which, if I am not mistaken, mounts an FTP connection as a drive in Windows Explorer.
When not using the option "Copy directly to destination file" (default setup), ViceVersa PRO copies the file to the destination to a temp file first with extension .tmp and then renames it to be the real name.
I suspect this is the part which conflicts with WebDrive, renaming the files to the real name. That is the only difference between using or not using the option Copy directly to destination file

Hi,
This may be, but I'm just trying to put together this puzzle right now. It just doesn't make sense. Why would Webdrive cause the system to hang when VV Pro is uploading a temp file and not when it copies directly? How would Webdrive know the differenence (or care)? Only if the copy/upload methods were different in some way?
What happens is the system is hung during the upload of the temp file, and it's not until the upload completes and the file renames that the system unhangs. So it's while the upload is going on that the hang takes place, nothing to do with the rename at the end at all. |

Hi,
the only difference between using a temp file or not is that when using a temp file VV will copy first to a file called something like ~vv.tmp on the destination and then renames the temp file to the original file name.
If you copy only 1 file , from the ViceVersa comparison window, does it freeze? At which point exactly?

I've also been working with the Webdrive support team about this. They've joined a shared desktop session & witnessed the problem. Trouble is, using my settings for both software (webdrive & VV), they cannot reproduce it at their end. So my workaround is to keep VV from using a temp file. So there's no point in wasting anyone elses time on this since it can't be reproduced by support people. But it happens and for now, it's just yet another software irritation that I live with. |
