I am using the evaluation copy of VV Pro, but it is clear that I'm going to purchase the server versions very soon. This is the best product I have seen for file syncs! I have two questions:

1. We have 4 - 2008 Servers that are used for active directory, file serving, ftp and web hosting. My primary interest in VV is for disaster recovery. If I backup the entire server, is VV Restore able to restore EVERYTHING so that I can recover onto a new machine? I.E. does handle of the AD Security, Registry, Settings, System State etc? OR should I only backup my "user files".

2. I have an easy opportunity to backup the data offsite to a Cable circuit that is 10mb down / 768k up (at the target end. The source end is on a Frac DS3). Is there a way to configure VV so it does not have to scan the target for files that have changed (like that it keeps the database locally or reads the archive bit on the file)? And / Or will the new VVEngine take care of this by not having to scan all the files? Also, what ports does VV use to goe through the firewalls like that.

Guess that's more than 2 questions.
Thanks

ViceVersa is mainly designed to backup "user files". Using the VSS option you could backup ALL files, including OS system files, Windows Registry, etc. ( see http://www.tgrmn.com/web/kb/item40.htm ) but there is no restore functions available yet for the system files. This is something we are working on.

The new VVEngine we are working on will not need to rescan the target, it will keep track of files that are changing on the source, which will make the backup a lot faster.

VV uses the SMB protocol (Windows File Sharing). See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunneling_protocol ( SSH Tunneling )

If you use a VPN , see
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc737500.aspx

Thank you for your response. Regarding window system file: That will work for me just fine. There just is no reason to take the time to back them up if we can't restore them so that works fine. These are Hyper-V machiens anyway so if I back up the .vhd files separately, I essentially have the whole image as well.

VVEngine. I saw on one of the other posts that you may be interested in beta sites for the new engine. We would be willing to particpate in that.
