I have setup VV and VVEngine on Computer2, and implemented source monitoring only, on both Computers. This works and works around the problem. I've turned it over to developers to do their application testing.
Having said that, I've also let them know that I will need to put everything back to the configuration that was failing, so that I can get you the information you've requested. I'd much prefer that we be able to do everything from Computer1 and not have to install anything on Computer2 so I'm interested to get that information to you. For the next few days, I'm going to have to leave it setup on both systems with source-only monitoring so that they can do their application testing but will revert back in a few days and gather the info to email you.
Thank you for all of your assistance with this. |

Hello
I am not sure it will be possible to setup all from the same machine. If you need to monitor remote folders on 3 remote machines and the machines need a login, I am not sure that will work,

Not three machines, just two.
2 folders on Computer1
2 folders on Computer2
My topology needs are posted earlier in this discussion thread.
A reply stated that A<->B, A<->C, A<->D would work. This implies VV and VVE installed only on Computer1 will work. That has been my problem this whole time. That topology does not work for me, but I haven't gotten a definitive answer to say it won't so I've spent hours of time trying to make it work as told to me early in this discussion thread. If that will not work, that's ok I'll just have to use my other method. But I need a definite answer on how this product works in such a situation as I've described.
Thank you. |

Hello
there are many configurations and settings that can be used in ViceVersa and VVEngine... it should work but it also depends on exactly how you wish to run.
Let me try a recap:
Folders to sync are:
\computer1\A\
\computer1\B\
\computer2\C\
\computer2\D\
The folders have to be identical at all times.
As mentioned I would set it up in this way:
Profile 1: sync \computer1\A\ vs. \computer1\B\
Profile 2: sync \computer1\A\ vs. \computer2\C\
Profile 3: sync \computer1\A\ vs. \computer2\D\
In the profile settings do not use mapped drives for shares on computer2, use the UNC path (\\computer\share\)
Each profile with a separate log file and tracking database.
Would then install VVEngine as a service, under the Admin account or an account which has access to the share C and D on Computer2.
The issue is the monitoring of the remote folders on Computer2 for changes. The local system account does not have access to the network, so the remotes cannot be monitored by VVEngine. Entering the user credential in the profile settings (under folders->network) will only work for scheduled runs (ViceVersa will log-in the remote folder when running), but it will not allow remote monitoring.
I think you mentioned you could not access the VVengine home page when you tried an admin account, but it should work.

This info is great, thank you. I was finally able to get back to testing, and what you have described was exactly my setup and my problems. I am now able to run the VVE service using a domain account, and am able to login to the VVE webpage.
Also, I am able to connect and synchronize 4 folders. I found a MS technote that pointed to the problem. In VV->Folders->Network, simply using \\Computer2\B as the path does not work, but what DOES work is using the IP address, or in my case I tried fully qualified domain name and that too works. \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\B or \\computer2.company.com\B. This bypasses a Windows feature (or bug) that has been around for some time, from what I am gathering.
Here's the technote.
http://www.support.microsoft.com/kb/938120
Near the bottom of the technote, the 2nd AP Lawrence link, the person says FDQN doesn't work. But it appears to work fine for me.
This is a HUGE deal for me to have this working. We had begun purchasing two VV and two VVE licenses for each server set, because I could not figure out how to make it all work with software only installed on one side, but we had to get an application into production ASAP. Now it appears this will do it. |

Hello
that's great!
Were you also able to detect file changes to the remote folder, that should not be possible under a service running a localsystem account.

No I could not, but I'm now successfully using a domain account to sync remote target folders. I had tried that before and also could never get things to work. The key was the VV Network settings path. You cannot simply use a hostname, you must use the IP or FQDN, per the MS technote.
I'll be testing more thoroughly to be absolutely sure, but the described error in the technote was the error I had been receiving. Hopefully this information can help someone else in the same situation.
Thank you TGRMN support for all of your assistance. |
