Hi folks,

I'm going to be limited in my ability to implement anything I might be told, because my use of ViceVersa emanates from Higher Authority; however, my frustration is getting the better of me ...

Vice Versa is used here to back up individual users My Documents to a network location. It's a bit of a waste of time for me because the speed at which it does so is slow compared to the speed at which my My Documents changes, so it's like painting the Forth bridge, only much worse, because the bridge never actually does get painted. For a few weeks I have been getting delayed write failures reasonably often. At the time they started, the bridge was about 33 % painted. The files that caused DWF were hundreds of MB in size. It didn't seem unreasonable that trying to back them up with a throttle set at 10 kB might cause problems. So I archived them off. Then I started getting DWF on files that were tens of MB in size, so I archived all them off too, along with a load of other stuff. Then I started getting DWF on files that were ones of MB ...

Suffice to say that I have now archived off several GB of data, and this has caused the bridge to unpaint itself from 33% down to never more than 5%. Yesterday it was 5%, currently it is 1%.

Can some explain to me why approximately halving the size of an (admittedly impossible) task causes ViceVersa to struggle even harder to keep up? And what causes delayed write failures?

Exasperatedly,

Andy

Hello

is the option "flush buffer every write" enabled in the profile settings? Are you connected to the network wired or wireless?

thanks!

I am connected with wires.

I can't see "flush buffer every write" as an option to enable/disable.

I should have said what version we have - sorry. I can't find a Help-About but based on the installation folder it seems to be v Pro 2. Doe sthat affect what options are available?

What I can see, if I view profile settings, is posted below. Needless to say, I can't actually change any of this stuff, but at least I can urge Higher Authority to do so if necessary.

Hello

It does not look like the option is enabled.

Flush buffer every write by default Windows writes to the destination file only when the disk cache is full. This option will force Windows to write to the destination file at every write pulse. For certain connections (e.g. Internet connections, VPN) this will improve performance and will make ViceVersa more responsive during a copy operation.

It may be useful to try this option (but cannot guarantee it will solve the issue you are seeing).

Also, "Delayed Write Failures" may be caused by a faulty LAN cable.
