Hello,
After perusing the forums, I think I have found the most logical way to implement this software for our needs. Currently, we have a mixture of desktops and laptops that all work off of mapped network drives. The laptops are then set to use Windows file synchronization. However, as I'm sure everyone know (or they likely wouldn't be here to begin with), Windows file sync is buggy, at best.
Here's what I think makes sense; if so, is there some tutorial or advice as how to actually make the setting in Vice Versa? Also, I'd like verification that I have the licensing scheme correct.
1) File server for the domain- does this need a license? I'm not sure what is required for bi-directional file sync...?
2) (5) desktop computers, with the network file info saved to the same folder on c:\ so that all working file paths will be the same. Each PC requires a license of VV, and needs to be configured with the same profile & to have Vlauncher set up to run as a service (THis is where I need help) so that it can act in real-time...?
3) (4) laptop computers, set up the same as the desktops with regards to C: directory structure and profile settings, with the excpetion of needing some sort of extra setting that prevents the program from trying to sync when the laptop is not logged on the domain...(This is also where I could really use help...!)
So essentially my scenario would maintain identical c:\%folder% file structures & duplicate files on all desktops and laptops, with the network file share bascially acting as a central buffer & central point for backup. Make sense?? I'm up for any advice and/or criticism. I've been desperate to find an alternative to what we're doing now, and would really like to get it implemented over the holidays while we're slow.
ANY help and guidance would be appreciated!!!
Thanks!

If you do not install ViceVersa on the file server, it does not need a license. In this setup it is not needed to install ViceVersa on the file server.

You need to install as a service only if you will require the sync to happen also when no one is logged on or you want to run the sync under a different account. I would recommend to use the VVEngine add-on instead of VVLauncher, VVEngine is more powerful: http://www.tgrmn.com/web/vvengine/vvengine.htm
You can schedule profiles to run real-time if you want, i.e. as soon as file changes are detected.

Will they synchronize vs a file share that is not there when not logged onto the domain? In that case VVEngine will not start the sync if the file server share is not available.

Yes, if you sync all the 9 workstations vs. the same folder share on the file server they will all end up having the same files on all workstations.
In total, 9 ViceVersa PRO licenses (non-server licenses) and 9 VVEngine licenses are needed for this setup.
Let us know how the project develops !

Hi !
I have some questions about this type of configuration. In fact, this scenario is the same i would like to set up in my firm. Then i've tested with 2 laptops and synchronization on the firm' server. But the test is not what i've expected.
Because the 2 laptops are moving (commercial business) and the first problem is that when thoses laptops are coming back, the VVlauncher didn't view that the server is back, then we need to sync manually (on click) but users will forget to click.
Is there a way to detect that the server is back ? |

I've never tested this using just the tools that come with ViceVersa Pro; I immediately bought VV Engine as well, which give you the extended tools you need to do "live" synchronization. When I set up my profile to run with VV Engine, I checked the (forgive me if this isn't verbatim; I'm not looking at the exact software window as I write this) "sync on startup & shutdown", as well as "ping the server to check for availability before running sync". Those two items pretty much covered all scenarios I could find.
So far, my test laptop scenario has been running lock-step, and I'm about ready to go live. My only issue now is to figure out how to set up file versioning on the server so that I can save the last several versions of a file if it changes & I want to revert; or if someone modifys a file after I do, and I want my version back. (HELP on this, please, admin!)
The TGRMN Admin may read this & hopefully verify that this would be the correct way to work... _________________ Jeff Briesemeister

Yes, use the VVEngine add-on for that, it will detect when the server is available again.
