We have a umber of sites that finish their backup job with the common Execution completed with file copy/delete errors result. Usually it is just a permissions or 'file in use' type of problem, but these particular sites are different.

Here is the profile data:
Quote:
Profile File: c:\techstuff\viceversaprofiles\databackup.fsf

Folders
- Source: "\\?\D:\Data\"
- Target: "\\?\UNC\ServerName\backup$\data\" (Archived)
- Include Subfolders: Yes
- Create sources/targets that do not exist
Comparison
- Comparison Type: Size and Timestamp
Execution
- Method: Backup (Mirror Source to Target)
- No overwrite / read-only / error confirmations
- Log File: "C:\Techstuff\ViceVersaLog\log1.log" (max 10000 KB) (empty log file each run)
- Log only summary and errors
- No archive for deleted/replaced source files
- Archive deleted/replaced target files to: "\\?\UNC\ServerName\archive$\data\"
- Archive max. 3 copies per file
- Remove archive copies older than 450 day(s)
- Copy files even if timestamp changes after initial comparison
- Try to copy files that are in use by other applications
- Use 'Volume Shadow Copy' to copy open files for source
- No empty source/target check
- Replace newer target files with older source files (backup only)
- Run custom scripts after execution

Have a look at the email log:

Quote:
Execution completed with file copy/delete errors.
Scriptversion: 2.03 Vice Versa: Build 2015
Profile: DataBackup
Exit Code: 3

I've gone through the ViceVersa log and this is an example of the files it was unable to delete:

img.photobucket.com/albums/v632/travelcard/screenshot.png
(Gah! - that was supposed to be a link to the image of the problem, but you don't allow links to external websites - how can we add screenshots then and what is the [img] tag above used for?
Copy the link above and add http etc. at the start of it to see the screenie)

As you can see there are multiple versions of the same file, but we have set the archive to only keep 3 copies. From the email result above you can see that the "Final Status" was fine, so basically the site has all the backups it needs, the only problem is that the old archives have not been deleted.

Any idea why this may be happening? 3 different sites have the same problem at the moment.

Thanks for your help.

Hello

do you have the error message that each archive file deletion failure gives? It looks like VV wants to remove the excess archive files but it is unable to do so.

thanks

These paths look wrong.

unc\bs1stantonys\archive$\data\staff\teacher\my documents\my pictures\desktop.ini_(2008-09-09_00-25-06_ove_t).ini

Question

I think it could be a problem with using \\?\UNC\ for the archive folder.

\\?\UNC\servername\archive$\data\

Probably using \\servername\archive$\data\ instead will work but it does not handle > 256 chars paths ....

yes, I saw that those paths looked wrong too, so I checked the job and it definitely has the proper \\?\UNC bit in it. We can't move away from the whole \\?\ thing because we migrated to ViceVersa from SecondCopy due to the 254 character limit which was making all our jobs fail.

Another interesting thing I've noticed is that every time I run the job a different amount of files fail - and once no deletions failed.

Any ideas?

Can you see in the log file what was the file path for those archive file deletions that did not fail? If it is a bug we'll fix it.

thanks

I'll untick the "log errors only" box and see what comes up.

You were right, I've unticked the "report errors only" box and can see that the ones that failed did not have the \\?\ before the UNC path. Here is one that worked:

Quote:
2008-09-24 17:01:21 : Deleting folder \\?\UNC\servername\backup$\data\Staff\Teacher\my documents\Reception\ [OK].

So, for some files the \\?\ bit is missing. How weird. do you know why that may have happened? I will email you the full log in case you want to see it.

Thanks

I have found the problem.

Build 2015 has a bug.

I noticed that the only recent jobs that finished with exit code 0 had no archived files to delete.

As a test, I managed to find an old 2014 build and installed it in a number of sites. I then re-ran the backup jobs that had failed only a few hours earlier and this time they all completed successfully.

Hopefully you'll be able to spot the bug quickly and build 2016 will be out shortly.

Thanks

Hi, it's been another week now. Any updates on this?
It all worked fine on 2014, so I'd presume it must be fairly easy to see what could be causing the problems - obviously it is something that's been coded differently since then.

Thanks

Hi, we should be able to release a fix for this quite soon. Thank you for your patience.
