Hello,

I am using ViceVersa to copy a directory from Windows XP to Windows XP over a WAN. This is a push from source to target using backup (one way replication).

I have successfully used ViceVersa to copy over the WAN to site #1 and I get close to 300KB/Sec. When I use ViceVersa to copy the same directory to site #2 I get 5KB/Sec.

There are differences in the sites that account for some slow down but nothing that would account for the extremely slow throughput on site #2. I copied the same directory using FTP and FTP averaged 50KB/Sec.

What can you suggest I try to optimize the use of ViceVersa when copying my directory to site #2? The directory is 1.7GB and consists of 17,386 files and 251 directories. I have successfully deployed ViceVersa over the last year and this is the first time I have been stumped on what to do.

I am not using CRC checking. I have turned off all real time anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities. The CPU is on 5-10% used during the file transfer (80% when using FTP so good for you). Physical memory is only 50% used. I have tried a variety of buffer sizes from smallest to largest.

I look forward to your reply.

Thank you.

Yes it is and I don't know, you tell me; Does TGRMN software require special tweaking when running over VPN to achieve expected throughput?

Using FTP (through the same VPN) throughput is what I would expect. If it helps, I’m using a Cisco VPN client.

I further refined the problem and found that the cause of the decreased throughput appears to be the when transferring tiny files (i.e. 2100 files 1K or smaller in a single directory). FTP does not suffer from this dramatic slow down when transferring tiny files over the same VPN.

Thanks.

28k is the highest I've seen, other transfers from this site over FTP will usually hit close to 256.
We are not using a VPN, this is strictly over our WAN. Any ideas would be helpful

FTP is asynchronous. It will always be faster than vice versa. Vice versa has to contend with RPC etc.. which does add overhead. Sounds normal

The initial post stated that I am getting 5KB/s vs. 300KB/s transferring the same data using the same protocol (ViceVersa/SMB) to two different sites with the same rated download speeds. The comment on FTP was simply to demonstrate that higher speeds were achievable to site #2 not to compare the FTP vs. SMB protocols. I realize that FTP is a faster protocol in some cases but I don’t care; what I do care about is the stark difference in throughput between what on paper appear to be identical sites.
