Der VV Experts,

I run a daily backup/mirror job over a 128k VPN line between 2 sites during night. I have to compare ~20GB, and every day approx. 600 files changed. My problem is, that every file let's say bigger than 5-10MB doesn't get copied. Attached you will see 2 examples + summary.

2 interesting issues:

1. the file after the large file is getting copied, so the network connection is still there

2. when you look at the time, this small file is getting copied, it's every time approx. 90 seconds after the large file started?! Is there some kind of timeout?

Thanks in advance,
Jack

Ex1:
2005-09-27 05:11:56 : Copying file \\sofa0005\forall\MARKETING & SALES\MARKETING\MMM\Vienna April 2005\BG Eucerin MMM April'05.ppt <to> \\skpa0004\sofia$\forall\MARKETING & SALES\MARKETING\MMM\Vienna April 2005\BG Eucerin MMM April'05.ppt (10,49MB) (Overwriting) ... [Can not write data to "\\skpa0004\sofia$\forall\MARKETING & SALES\MARKETING\MMM\Vienna April 2005\~vv1.tmp". The specified network name is no longer available.] [ERROR].

Ex2:

Hi, maybe this previous post will help:

http://www.tgrmn.com/web/forum/viewtopict221.htm

It looks like this is may be a VPN/Network issue.
If you use XCOPY and/or Windows Explorer does the copy succeed?

I copied one file via xcopy (10,5MB in about 18 minutes...yes, the guys down there are working in the moment)...but it worked.

Then I copied a file via explorer (4,5MB in about 10 minutes)...also succeeded.

So I think there is some other problem.

In the past we had this error message on every copy-task, because we used absolute drive letters instead of relative.

No there is, as I said, "only" a problem with large files.

Any other suggestions?

I have a few suggestions:

- Try to copy only 1 large file with ViceVersa after comparison is done. Right-click on the large file in the comparison window list and select copy to the other side (in the same direction as you did with XCOPY and Windows Explorer). It may be that the issue is caused when copying multiple files over the VPN, one after the other.

If that fails:
- Try switching on the option 'do not use a temp file' in the advanced sync options.
- In the performance/bandwidth settings choose a smaller buffer size and switch on the option 'flush the buffer every write'

The reason why I think this is something with the network is that at the point where it fails VV is just copying data, nothing special is happening....

I also used Google to look for more info but could not find much:
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=vpn+large+files+The+specified+network+name+is+no+longer+available

Confused

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Many thanks in advance, VV-Expert!!!!

I tried copying only one file (36MB) in the VV-Console after comparing, without any success (VV didn't start at all - I mean after 32kb he quits with the same error like every time).

Then I set the option "Do not use tmp", result: the same!

Then, I was quiet before giving up frustrated, I decreased the buffer size from 32kb to 16kb and flushed the buffer every write...tadaaaa - now it's copying, Cool !

Best regards & greetz,
Michael from Vienna, Austria

Glad that this is working now! Smile

The solution in this case was lowering the buffer size from 32kb to 16kb or flushing the buffer every write ?

Or both ?

I changed both settings at the same try, but I think the decrease of the buffer size was the solution, because:

I made a "fresh" comparison, tried to copy only one file as you told me with 32kb and it failed, so there can't be some data in the buffer from previous copytasks.

And with 32kb VV didn't actually start to copy.

Then, with 16kb the transfer starts immediately!

Maybe this is helpful as "tip and trick" for other VV-users Wink !

Thanks again!
