I bought Vice Versa Pro 2 this week (build 2014) and have successfully set up many details of copying files from my desk machine to a notebook. But with a SQL Server 2005 database, I fail.

I see Vice Versa initializing VSS and storing the database (Tools.mdf and Tools_log.ldf) as HardDiskVolumeShadowCopyXX, but when VV begins to copy to the notebook I get this message: 'Can not create or replace "[...path...]Tools.mdf". Access is denied. Error.'

My profile has checkmarks for both "Try to copy files that are in use by other applications" and "Use Volume Shadow Copy to copy open files for both source and target."

What can I change to avoid the Access is denied message?

Thanks,

Apologies! I hit submit before a careful read through. Let me add two points:

(1) Ignore the word Outlook in the subject header. That transfer is working fine.

(2) Both my desk machine and the notebook are running Vista, sp1. The desk machine is Vista Ultimate, the notebook, Vista Business.

Hello

Maybe Windows Vista is excluding these files from the VSS snapshot, see:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa819132(VS.85).aspx

The registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToSnapshot

contains the list of files not to be included in the VSS snapshot.

thanks

You suggested that Vista might be excluding my files from the VSS snapshot, but as I said in my initial message, Vice Versa reports they have been found and stored in a HardDiskVolumeShadowCopy. Nevertheless, I checked the registry key you gave me; it does not list my SQL database files.

As a workaround, I have learned that in SQL Server I can detach the database on my notebook, let Vice Versa do its run and overwrite the older files, and then reattach SQL server to the newer files. It's cumbersome, but will work. I hope, though, you'll be able to free me from having to do this.

Would you please clarify the advanced profile setting for Use Volume Shadow Copy. What does specifying Target or Both mean? Your help file says that for VSS "the file being copied must be on a local disk", which I read to mean the source must be a local disk. I can't see what selecting the other options offers me.

Thanks,
