Hi there. Now this may not have avthing at all to do with Vice Versa, but we are just looking at all potential causes of something strange that looks to have happened a couple of weeks ago......

A large number of files (that are copied overnight by VV) appear to have been renamed in the format filename-date-time-del_t.extension e.g. testing.doc would have been renamed testing.doc_(2008-05-24_04-16-15_DEL_T).doc.

Has anyone come across this kind of thing happening with VV (or via anything else for that matter).

Thanks

Hello

files are appended a suffix similar to _(2008-05-24_04-16-15_DEL_T) when they are moved to the archive folder. 2008-05-24_04-16-15 is the time/date when the file was moved, DEL_T means the file was deleted from target and moved to the target archive folder.

thanks

That's fine - and examining the archive folder bears this out. Is there any reason however why there would be a large number of files named in this way (other than because someone copied them back out of the archive) in the original target location?

Do the files get renamed before they are moved - meaning that if the move failed we would be left with the renamed files in the target folder?

Thanks John

The only thing I can think of is that the files were copied by someone from the archive to the target folder....

I can understand that - but just to get a better understanding of the process - when does the rename happen. i.e. are the files renamed then copied to the archive or are they copied to the archive then renamed?

If it is the formed then it is possible that the files were renamed b ut then the copy failed for some rerason?

Thanks

Hello

if you do NOT use the option "Move Files to The Archive Folders" (profile settings -> archive settings) the target file is copied with the new name to the archive folder before the newer files is copied from source to target.

If you use the option "Move Files to The Archive Folders" files are moved, not copied, to the archive folder. I am not 100% sure how this is done (ViceVersa relies on Windows to do it). It probably first renames and then moves....

Do you have the original file names in the target folder ? e.g. is testing.doc still in the target folder?

thanks

No. Only the renamed files exist in the target folder. The "Move files to archive folder is NOT selected".
