Does ViceVersa support full-disk bootable ghost-mirror-image back-up
from an external USB harddrive?
I am looking for a (*SIMPLE*-to-use) software tool to use which will provide for weekly backing up of the entire hard-drive contents such
that if a hard-drive crashes or the system gets corrupted, I can
retrieve the external back-up ghost-mirror disc from the closet, plug
it in via the USB connector and boot up from it. I have seen other
people do this but the software they used was too complicated for me
to feel comfortable using and I am afraid something will go wrong and
I will lose everything.
Will ViceVersa do this? If not, any suggestions on suggested software
that is easier to use than whar Norton Symantec offers will be much
appreciated!!
Thanks!!

Hello Mike B,
Thank you for your interest in ViceVersa.
ViceVersa will mirror all files from source to target so you have a copy, but the target disk will not be bootable.

So let's see if I have this right.
Source drive is completely backed up to target (USB external) drive.
Source drive dies a horrible, screaming death.
I'll have to install a new source drive (which will likely be of a different capacity compared to the original source drive), install Windows, install VV, restore from the target drive, and I'm back to where I was just before original source drive died including all drivers, updates, registry, programs, settings, favorites, etc?
I can live with that. I just want to know if that's the required technique or if there are other, maybe better options.
And what about another scenario in which source drive just became corrupted somehow. Would the target drive have the same (or close to the same) corruption? |

ViceVersa is mainly built to backup / copy application data, like documents, databases, source files, etc. , i.e. data that cannot be re-created.
The above scenario you describe would work, under the assumption that the the same Windows version is installed.

If you need to have an exact mirror of your drive and have the partition bootable try disk imaging software.
The advantage of ViceVersa is that it is generally faster and the backup is much easier to manage because the files are mirrored as-is and readily accessible.

This is an issue with many backup applications. However you could monitor the hard drive for failures, see http://www.tgrmn.com/web/kb/category10.htm
