Using ViceVersa PRO 2 (Build 2011 SN49), I am having a problem copying files from one hard drive with “Volume Shadow Copy” enabled. I created a “Mirror Source to Target” profile to backup various folders from three internal SATA NTFS drives (letters C, M and V) to an external NTFS USB drive (letter N) on a Windows XP computer. With “Volume Shadow Copy” enabled, it copies the folders and files successfully from two of the source drives (C and V) to the target drive but with one of the source drives (M), it only copies the empty folders to the target drive but none of the files. If I do not enable “Volume Shadow Copy”, then it copies all the files successfully from that drive too.

Looking at the log file, for the “C” drive where the files are copied from successfully, I see:
Start Execution ----
Backup (Mirror Source to Target)
---- Start copying ----
-- Copying to target...
Initializing Volume Shadow Copy DLL ...
Creating Volume Shadow Copy for C: ... Done. Volume Shadow Copy is at GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1

For the “M” drive where the files are not copied from, I see:
Creating Volume Shadow Copy for M: ... Done. Volume Shadow Copy is at
(it does not show where the Volume Shadow Copy is located at)

The files from the “V” drive copy successfully and there are no entries in the log file (although the files were copied successfully).

I created and executed a separate “Mirror Source to Target” profile job just for the problem “M” drive. With “Volume Shadow Copy” enabled, the same problem occurs. With “Volume Shadow Copy” not enabled, the files are copied successfully.

What do I need to do so “Volume Shadow Copy” will work with that drive?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Here is a follow-up:

I edited all the folder paths so each started with “\\?\” (to handle path names that exceed 259 characters) (even though that problem drive did not have any path that long and there were no errors in the log saying that was a problem) and I renamed the “M” drive to “P” (because I use that drive mainly to store photos). I have since executed the full “Mirror Source to Target” profile with “Volume Shadow Copy” enabled and it now successfully copies the files from that problem drive (now named “P”).

In case this problem returns, does anybody know why it happened and how to fix it if it does happen again?

Hi, thank you for the update. I do not know why it is failing without \\?\ , very strange. We never heard about this before. Sorry I cannot be of more help.
