We want to be able to use ViceVersaPro to backup data from a Server to a remote source via VPN.

We know how to achieve this but the problem as we see it is the initial run.
Backing up 50Gb over a VPN takes such a long time, and we are talking hours.

My question is
Is there any way that we could use a USB hard drive at the Source Site to make the initial Backup from Vice Versa. (Target folders on the USB Hard Drive Source Folders on the Server)
Then take the USB Drive to the Remote Site and copy those Target Folders to the System we want to act as the Target. Then reconfigure ViceVersa at the Source site to point to the Target Folders at the Remote Site via the VPN. (In order to save that initial file transfer over VPN.
We suspect that the file attributes that ViceVersa compares would still mean Vice Versa would recognise the Source and target as different and would still do a full file and folder copy rather than just an update.

Any ideas please.

Hello

Using a USB drive for the initial copy is the best option.

However, you need to make sure that when you copy the files, they do keep the same file timestamps. It is necessary that the files copied to the remote computer have the same timestamps as the corresponding source files.

If the source and target are in 2 different time zones, that can be challenging because USB drives are usually formatted as FAT32 which does not keep time zone information.

Another issue is that FAT32 timestamps have lower time resolution, so file timestamps can change up to +/- 2 seconds.
ViceVersa provides the option in the profile settings to ignore up 2 to seconds to work around this issue.

thanks

Thanks for the response.

But just clarify the 'Timestamp' issue please.

The Time Zones are the same, but the time between making the initial run to the USB drive and the time when that data is transferred from the USB drive to the Target System at the Remote location could be many hours later even days.

Wont the action of copying those files from the USB drive to the Target Location at the Remote Site create different Timestamps? Or am I moving down the wrong path here.

I suppose I could just try it and see what happens.

Timestamps are carried over when copying files. The only issue are time zones and the fact that FAT32 is not as precide with seconds as NTFS.

You could try with a few files in a subfolder ans see what happens...

thanks
