Hello,
I have been using some form of sync software for about 5 years now for a server imaging process. We have always struggled with the problem I am about to present. The last time I tested this problem was a year or so ago. I was optimistic that time/technology would have overcome this problem in that time. After testing ViceVersa today, the problem still exists.
The product that we currently use also has this problem and upon speaking with their support, they provided no tips whatsoever. If I can find a resolution to this, our company will switch products in a heartbeat.
Problem: We are copying files from SATA hard drives in a server to FireWire attached 2TB external drives. The files are quite large, ranging from a couple of gig up to hundreds of GBs.
None of that really matters, I don't think, the problem is that our imaging app works much better using 2003 server. But, the problem is that every sync product that we have ever tested slows down to a crawl anytime we use a "server" OS.
Our first encounter with this was with W2KServer. We ended up having to go with 2KPro. Now the same problem is encountered with 2003Server. We are going to have to go to XP to solve this. I've already tested this and the results are:
2003Server: 25GB in 2.5 hours
XP: 25GB in 15 minutes
Those results were with the same software and exact same profile.
I suspect that this problem has something to do with the "extra" stuff that the server OS is trying to do, but my question is how do I stop it and just have it to do a straight forward copy.
Any help at all would be highly appreciated.
Even if I get no resolution to this issue, at least someone maybe can use this post as a hint that using a "desktop" OS version verses a "server" version will cut sync times drastically.
Thanks for your help. |

Hello
Quote: | 2003Server: 25GB in 2.5 hours

Are these results obtained using ViceVersa PRO 2 build 2014?
From your description it sounds to me like this could be caused by two issues:
a) There could be some 'resident' real-time software that scans the files upon copying. For instance anti-virus or anti-spyware software that scans files in real-time. Or some sort of file indexing software.
b) If you are copying files over the network this could be a network issue
Let me know,
thanks! _________________ --

Hello,
Thanks for the reply.
I just took a look and the version that I am using is indeed the latest, build 2014. I just downloaded it last week and obtained these results.
The drives that I am syncing to are Lacie 2TB FireWire attached drives. They are using FireWire 800 technology since this was the fastest speed that we could find. This speed is advertised at 800MB/s. I started a sync last Friday before I left work and upon returning today, I noticed that the sync completed 174GB of data in 11hours. The average data rate was 4.5MB/s. Something is not right.
I do have Symantec corporate antivirus running on the machine although, it is configured to ignore the data and external drives.
I am pretty sure that all drive indexing is off as well. I will double check this though.
The test that I performed last week was WinXP vs. 2003Server with identical software installed and configured identical. That is why I feel that it is some sort of overhead that the server version is trying to do. Both builds were with NTFS partitions so I don't think that is a factor.
I am ready to attempt anything you suggest.
Thanks |
